If you died today, would you have left a positive influence on someone’s life? Or would you feel delighted because you know you did something that changed the world? This is the question that countless people should ask themselves when trying to choose a career or find their purpose in life. Our everyday actions can bring so much happiness and change to another’s life. Therefore, when we fight for change and take a stand, it can drastically change the world around us. All my life I have always heard about Nelson Mandela and the tremendous impact he had on so many lives. His name would constantly be brought up in conversations among incredible activists like Martin Luther King Jr., Marcus Garvey, and Malcom X. These marvelous advocates for black rights made it possible for my equal education and opportunity in the U.S. Can you imagine if they never lived? Many would still have to face the unfair practices and labor. This is why I am immensely affected by Mandela and extremely inspired. Mvezo, the small village Nelson lived in, was on the banks of Mbashe River. His father, a counselor to tribal chief lost his title, which made them move to Qunu. They lived in huts and had a diet of Maize, songhum, pumpkin, and beans. Accordingly, Mandela went on to be the first in his family to go to school and favorably he fell in love with learning. Mandela’s father lost his life to lung disease when Nelson was nine. This led him to be adopted by a chief so he moved to another village called Mghekezweni. The chief welcomed him as one of his own and expected the same responsibilities from Mandela that he gave to his other children.
