She mentions how more and more women are going to college and paying the same about for their classes and their male counterparts, however they will end up missing out on one million dollars in their lifetimes just because of their sex. She discusses this while on the topic of women in college and the workplace, “When we want to get paid that the trouble starts” (Steinem 30). When speaking about reproductive freedom Steinem says, “A women’s ability to decide when and whether to bear a child is not a “social issue”; it is a human right” (Steinem 29). Women should have controller over their body, and that it should not even be an issue because it should be a right, just like freedom of speech or the right to vote, which women had to fight for also. Steinem additionally bring to attention how even though a majority of adults in the United States qualify as caregivers socially most of them are consider not to be working. She thinks this way of thinking requires some review and that only tax policy needs to be changed in order to fix this issue. Feminists work together as a whole, even though there are different groups, all are working towards a future where equality is a human right. In another article, discussed in class, Mad Science by Beth Skwarecki, the author concurs that some science that the media portrays contain misleading titles in addition to maybe not even being science at all. In her article Beth writes, “It’s bad enough when we see images of women as passive, petty, dumb, or slutty in fiction or advertisements, but stereotypes that come with the lofty stamp of science have the air of being, well, factual” (Skwarecki 69). In Women’s Studies, we try to separate from the myths and try to see concepts with clear and open minds, but with all of the misconceptions and stereotypes thrown at us every day from jokes, to TV, or social networking sites, we must be critical of the information we encounter.
