Potok and Posner in The Chosen emphasis reading a lot and they show why they see reading as something important for humankind. In The Chosen we read how Danny is influenced by reading and how he is educated by it. Reading is not beneficial only for religious purposes, but also for mental growth and development. If we see on the influence reading has in ourselves, we would be surprised how little control we have on our own lives. In The Chosen we can see how reading influenced them in their life choices and in their religious belief. When Danny went to visit Reuven after he has hit him while playing baseball, Danny in order to get forgiveness from Reuven quotes passages from the Talmud: “Yoma. Page 87b. If someone asks you for forgiveness you are supposed to grant it. I told you I’m very sorry for what happened. And I’m asking you to forgive me.” (The Chosen page13).
