In The Divine Comedy: Inferno Dante shows how reading matters in life. There are many reasons of why Dante wrote The Divine Comedy one of them is for literacy purposes. He wrote the comedy in Tuscan Italian instead of Latin; even though, Italian had not been standardized into one language yet. Dante’s Comedy was one of the Italian writing and it became the language that all educated could understand and study. He may have written the comedy for revenge as many think, but in my opinion he wrote it to educate people, and help them understand literature in a language they could read and understand. Dante also writes about great philosophers and writers in the Comedy. When Dante first meets Virgil his guide, his master, his doctor he says:

Potok and Posner in The Chosen emphasis reading a lot and they show why they see reading as something important for humankind. In The Chosen we read how Danny is influenced by reading and how he is educated by it. Reading is not beneficial only for religious purposes, but also for mental growth and development. Danny and Reuven learn this and practice it in The Chosen. Danny reads secular books that inspire him, and Reuven discovers his purpose in life and become a rabbi. If we see on the influence reading has in ourselves, we would be surprised how little control we have on our own lives. In The Chosen we can see how reading influenced them in their life choices and in their religious belief. When Danny went to visit Reuven after he has hit him while playing baseball, Danny in order to get forgiveness from Reuven quotes passages from the Talmud: “Yoma. Page 87b. If someone asks you for forgiveness you are supposed to grant it. I told you I’m very sorry for what happened. And I’m asking you to forgive me.” (The Chosen page13).
