She and her inner voice are having a conversation of re-evaluating her persona as seen where Alvarez states “who I am when I’m down on paper” (2) she is asking her inner self this question, as if wanting to get a response back of which type of person she has become. The language of the author used throughout her poem is simple language so she can get her message across through anyone like “text a child could understand” (8). A paper is just a paper there is nothing especial about it but when words are written on it, pictures drawn or ideas presented on it. It transforms into a form of communication with others. The felling of characterizing herself as “undressed down” (6) like throwing her true self on paper for the world to see her in her natural state, the author feels a sense of wariness. Then we the readers are presented with the image of “the real text a child could understand” (8) implicating back with the idea why she used a simple language. She feels more comfortable reaching the reader through the idea of keeping it simple. The ideas so far presented by the author represent how this woman has struggle trying to fit in and to this point feels that she hasn’t accomplished her goal of re-venting herself. The allegory is that “line by line” (7) her advice to others who will “take hart” from the words she has express on paper will learn something about their selves. The irony of her confusion and giving advice to take love to poetry and find ones true self show that the author hasn’t taken her advice herself because “why do I get confused” (9) meaning she has not looked through the words on the paper to see her true self.
