The calendar in Hinduism is divided between auspicious and inauspicious times. Signifying when is it correct to perform certain events. The new moon signifies it is at a time of auspiciousness representing life. While a full moon represents death bringing auspiciousness. Another cosmology would be the horoscope and astrology due to that “in ancient India, it was considered to be a distinct branch of knowledge” (Pechilis 49). This was used as a practice for example a child horoscope that from its “time of birth it can be determined everything from its name to when all important ritual in its life are conducted” (Pechilis 49).Deities are, also another cosmology in Hinduism due to that there is a belief that there are many manifestations of this divine one. The Supreme Being can manifest itself in many forms. This is what Hinduism cosmology is and what their beliefs are and incorporate into themselves and lives. Family in Hinduism is a caste, community or sectarian group. There are “four classes of societies” (Pechilis 45) which are warriors, merchants, producers and servants. By these caste people identify themselves and their place in this world. They can be excluded from their caste if they deviate. One of the life cycle rituals that Hindus perform are the wedding rituals. This “is considered to be a sacrament and the most auspicious event in one’s life” (Pechilis 51). Funeral rituals are the most inauspicious and impure time in one’s life. Due to its impureness the people who attended or where family members of the deceased are given a cleansing bath that purifies the person. There are also, domestic rituals of fasting for several days “in honor of specific goddesses and for various purposes” (Pechilis 58). Their fasting is from “dawn to dusk and break their fast after seeing the rising moon” (Pechilis 58). This fasting is done in order to preserve conjugal happiness and it is done in between the months of October and November.
