For this reflective journal I have chosen to reflect on the changes that have occurred throughout my placement, and how this has impacted my learning. I have been very blessed this semester to have a very stimulating and informational placement, however changes that occurred at my placement organization has undeniably impacted my learning. Approximately 6 months into my placement, my supervisor, Hadiya, chose to leave my placement organization, Harmony House, to move onto other job opportunities. Hadiya’s absence has impacted my ability to learn in my placement, however the impact has been largely positive. Due to Hadiya leaving Harmony House, I was able to gain another supervisor, Caitlin, and she acts as the housing advocate at Harmony House. …show more content…
As I have learned throughout my time as a social work student at Carleton University, I have become familiar with the generalist perspective of social work practice. My understanding of the general perspective stipulates, that it is better for a social worker to have a strong understanding of multiple theories and ways of practice, rather than being proficient in solely one theory or practice. This is directly related to the changes that have occurred at my placement, I have luckily been able to learn from two supervisors. Therefore, I was able to develop 2 distinct practices, which were influenced by my first supervisor Hadiya, and my second supervisor Caitlin. Both of the practices that I have learned were developed by watching how both of my supervisors respond to different experiences, as well as their interaction patterns with the residents of Harmony House. I believe that my social work skills have grown due to being able to learn from both Hadiya and Caitlin, as both of my supervisors have taught me how to be a caring, comprehensive and successful social worker. Overall, I was able to develop and utilize many perspectives that I have learned from my supervisors which has led to better social work intervention skills, and has led to a comprehensive practical understanding of the generalist perspective of social work (Inderbitzen, …show more content…
As previously explained, I am now able to discover and learn about different social work practices from both the women’s advocate and the housing advocate at Harmony House. To outline a few skills, I learned, while under the women’s advocate’s supervision, I was able to learn about the application process that occurs in shelters. Furthermore, I was able to sit in on consultations that my supervisor provided to residents, as well as site visits to organizations such as Ontario Works and a visit to a provincial court case. The women’s advocate, Hadiya, also encouraged me to attend social justice events around Ottawa. Under the women’s advocate I was able to develop my understanding of different social service organizations around the city, as well as how to implement social justice into my social work practice, in order to comprehensively assist clients in my present and future social work practice. In addition, under the housing advocate I am currently learning many new skills that in conjunction with the women’s advocate skills, has positively impacted my social work practice. While under the housing advocate, Caitlin’s, supervision I have been able to become aware of how the current state of the public housing system in Ottawa impacts the most vulnerable groups in our society, namely survivors of domestic abuse. Furthermore, I believe that

I have learned that I can never assume things about a person or situation. I also learned that I should do research on my clients background and try to gain understanding about what goes on in their lives and why they react the way they do. One major mistake the social worker made was over stepping her professional boundaries. This in particular showed me that I have to be always mindful of agency policy, and not get too attached to a client. Faith Harper’s story gave great insight into social work practice, and I will attempt to go above and beyond to help all women in Faith’s…

Canadian Social Work Understandings Understanding on the Comparisons Perusing the various Canadian literature and comparing them to my past experiences in child protection enlightened me to the differences in practices between the First world and the third world as created and influenced by Western concepts and practices. First, social workers are bestowed with high power that it must be used with caution. The use of power by the social worker contributes and influences how the interaction between the client and the worker will unravel (Gladstone, Dumbrill, Leslie, Koster, Young, & Ismaila, 2012). For these reasons, various theories employed in practice stresses the significance of consciously minimizing the power imbalance within and while…

As a practice-heavy field, social work may not appear to place much importance on theory; however, theory should dictate every decision social workers make. Perspectives for practice include the well-known theories of psychodynamic and systems, as well as lesser-known perspectives such as existential. Though some theoretical perspectives are better suited for either a micro or macro setting only, social workers should possess a diverse and readily available knowledge of theories to aid their work in any setting. This expanded repertoire (of many, but not all theories) allows social workers the ability to apply at least one theory to literally any situation in any environment with any number of participants. To demonstrate the necessity…

Her story helps to tell the tale of overcoming obstacles and the desire for a better life. As social workers, we can learn from this memoir to see our clients as a whole and help them to identify their own personal strengths. Focusing on past mistakes or problems only helps to clarify and bring light to the “exceptions of the problem” and what is going right in our client’s life. I think that this memoir shows what true resiliency is and should continue to be shared in the social work profession to better enhance our own skills when working with…

Ethical Issues When Social Workers Specialize in Addictions Social workers that specialize in addictions can face many ethical issues while trying to help their client achieve sobriety. A social worker needs to focus on human relations, trust building, allowing the client to make independent decisions, and to show an acceptance and respect for the client regardless of the situation. One ethical issue is if a woman is seeking help for substance abuse and she discloses that she is pregnant.…

If service users, carers and social workers work alongside each other instead of against each other they can both give feedback back and forth and work in partnership to form better outcomes for others in similar situations. This will help build up relationships and helps the understanding of both parties. This situation was an impacting one to reflect on as the Congress day was set up to help widen our knowledge and I found it highly beneficial from this specific workshop that 'service users and carers are so diverse and not two are alike.' (Congress day, 2017) This means that a social worker needs to have the skill of adapting to suit the service user and carers needs they are working with.…

#1 A. Social work is a value based practice and employs a two pronged approach. The juggling act, as it were, in social work is a 100 year old debate exploring if the goal of social work is that of seeking social reform or focusing on treating the individual. My desire to pursue a master’s degree in social work was fueled by the outcome of my experiences of learning about domestic violence in my undergraduate course. It was also influenced by my active role different organizations where I was able to provide care for child victims of domestic violence. The desire of furthering my studies started way back when I was volunteering at a non-profit organization with an objective of becoming more familiar in working with children that were coming from a less advantaged families. Initially, the organization I was working for did not give me information about the children I was taking care of; they did not tell me that the children were victims of domestic violence. Introduction The purpose of this report is for me to develop critical awareness and self-reflection of core social welfare competencies experienced while volunteering with the Healthy Living for Seniors Program (HLSP). The HLSP is a UnitingCare community day program for people over the age of 65 years thus the field of practice is “aged care” (Chenoweth & McAuliffe 2012, p. 141). The program is designed to support the health and wellbeing of their clients through a focus on social participation, independence and their quality of life (UnitingCare Ageing 2015). For my critical reflection I will be analyzing a fifteen-minute video role-play I conducted when a young person presented to a mock family support service seeking housing support and information after leaving home due to family violence. As a social work student I will examine in practice if I used anti oppressive skill orientations to support the client’s needs, referencing peer feedback provided by a university student to support my arguments. This reflection will include my areas of improvement that are apparent and conclude with answering if the overall approach of the video role-play was identifiably anti oppressive practice. The practice framework I have developed and incorporated in this video role play strongly reflects my values, beliefs and principles that I consider fundamental to effective social work practice.…

Define Critical Reflection, including its theoretical foundations Within the field of social work, the professionals have to recognize and evaluate their own personal values, thoughts and beliefs. A social worker must be able to recognize how their personal preferences may or may not affect their behaviors and decisions in their daily practice. For this reason, critical reflection is a very important concept to be knowledgeable of within the social work profession. Critical reflection can be defined as a process that an individual has that allows them to identify their behaviors, which are then questioned and evaluated in order to create different ways of reacting (Savaya & Gardner, 2012).…
