Reflective Essay: Joining The Upward Bound Program

This library is loud the students are flustering and distracting each other. After the head librarian leaves the students’ excitement from their freedom is causing an uprising. Before we lose the battle the other tutors and myself, quickly approach each table to remind students of their environment. Strolling to my station I stop mid stride and peer over my shoulder. A student that I frequently work with is shifting in her chair and fiddling with her phone. Asking if I can join her at the table I smile. As I run the numbers on her paper through my head, she sits back continues to play with her phone. Turning to her I ask “where did this two come from?”. Bewilderment draws across her face as she describes her reasoning. She pauses and begins to blush as she says “I forgot to distribute”. They stay within the program because we build relationships and provide mentorship to help our students develop a passion for learning. My students are philanthropist, artists, future leaders. They’re full of character, dreams, and their own educational goals. As they grow and learn to express themselves and explore their freedom, it has been my job as a tutor to provide guidance and advice. After working with students for the past few years I have developed an aspiration to pursue a career in education.
