Unit 2 Re102 Reflection

RE102 Final Reflection This past August, myself and a few hundred other juniors were catapulted into a new environment, a new life. Our lives were unrecognizable from the lives we lived merely a week before move in. New people, new classes, and a new home. All these changes came in such a little amount of time, giving the students little time to adjust. To try and help compensate for this, NCSSM has students take a residential education class, RE102. RE102 teaches students about different life skills that will help them at NCSSM and beyond. This class focuses on different life skills such as: communication, stress management, healthy relationships, and online presence. RE102 has prepared me for life after Science and Math by helping …show more content…
Making a good first impression and formally introducing oneself is one of the techniques the class was taught. To formally introduce yourself, it is important to have a firm, confident handshake, make a good amount of eye contact, smile, and articulate your words. Being respectful and confident when meeting a prospective employer, professor, or colleague is very important to constructing a healthy reputation and building a good, professional relationship. Another technique for good communication skills I was taught in RE102 is how to send a proper email to an employer or professor. Using the DAPPS rule-Dated, Achievable, Personal, Positive, Specific- I now know how to respectfully make a request to a teacher through an email. Another lesson in good communication was guidlines on Student-Teacher Interactions. Some of the most important guidelines include: never use your GPA/grade as leverage, always be respectful, and remember that you earn your grade. I feel as if I am normally very respectful when I talk to my teachers, but I must admit, at times I have felt as if teachers should give me a break if my grade is on the line. When I think things like this I remind myself that I earn the grade and teachers do not owe me a high grade. If I get a B, it is because I put enough work in for a B, and I am to blame for this, not my teachers. Overall, I learned lot about communicating purposefully, honestly, and …show more content…
My favorite assignment was the NCSSM resource guide. I found myself referring back to it for the times and locations of things on campus many times. I also highly appreciated the lesson on consent. Teaching about consent in schools is very important and stopping sexual assault begins with educating people on consent. I appreciated that the school recognizes that putting a stop to the issue begins in schools and the lesson on consent is very much needed. RE102 gave an appropriate amount of homework that was engaging and relevant to the class. The class has definitely helped me prepare for the rest of my time at NCSSM as well as life after Science and Math. Overall, RE102 helped me prepare for life after NCSSM through lessons on resumes, time management, communication skills, and so much

The Assignment that has had the Most Impact on me so Far In my first semester of going back to college, after having been out for over ten years, I took Business English, taught by, May Daniel. This class was a long-distance learning class and started at 4:30 and ended at 5:50 p.m. Mrs. Daniel, told us about our assignments on the first day and one of them was a portfolio project that would be due on the last days of the semester. This assignment included making a resume, a cover letter, a recommendation letter, a cover sheet and a report giving details about the career we are hoping to achieve after graduations and then we had to make it into a PowerPoint presentation to present to the class.…

If I get an “B-” instead of that elusive “A+,” I will be fine. I’m not who I used to be and now understanding slowly is more important to me. My grades will reflect what I actually learn. Striving for perfection, as I was taught as a child, is no longer normal. I wish I could go back in time and tell my teenage self, that mistakes will be made and your life will be hard…

During the first half of the semester for ENC 1102, I believe that my writing skills have improved from ENC 1101; some of which are getting to page length, correctly citing a source, and incorporating how a quote is related to my argument. I still have some errors within my writing that I have not quite figured out how to tackle. Some concepts that I have not gotten down to a tee must be coming up with a thesis statement, basic grammar errors, introducing quotations, and repetition. I have also learned how to distinguish the difference between a personal essay and an argumentative essay with first hand on the two types and how why my grade differed from essay one and two.…

For example, the idea of communicating with a professor through email or text messaging. Being formal and asking only questions is something that can make the relationship between student and teacher successful. Also I enjoyed learning about the behaviors of how not to act during class, and how to be an engaged learner and a good note takes. The idea of how to make people like you also stuck out to me, and made me think of how I can just simply listen to what others have to say and just smile and relate to what they are saying and this will make them feel more understood and welcomed as a friend. Lastly, the one topic that I thoroughly took to heart was the idea of preparing for a lecture before the lesson.…

Throughout this whole quarter, I would say that I have learned a lot in this class. Not only that I learned what is in the syllabus but also the importance of being able to apply my understandings on a problem. I believe that the instructor did a great job in addressing the learning outcomes in this class by helping us in understanding the concepts that we need to learn in order complete this course. One of the learning outcomes of this course is that each students should be able to describe, interpret and predict the propagation of energy via waves, using applied conservation of energy principles. Before this class, I have learned about the law of conservation of energy in PHYS221 with Micheal Greiner.…

As a first year I found myself being one of the youngest if not the youngest one in ASAM 230. Although most of the students in ASAM 230 were seniors, this course would be most helpful to students in their second or third year of college. The assignments we are asked to read, write and discuss in class are directed to help students recognize their interests. For example, reading about Community-Based organizations and becoming more knowledgeable on how they are coordinated can be essential to a student who is still trying to decipher what they want to do with their college career. Most importantly the paper, What Matters to Me and Why?, is the epitome of ASAM 230 as we are able to connect our experiences in service learning and are able to apply…

I think that this reading allowed for the class to contribute in informed discussion and although it is early in the course, it opens up our thought processes to discuss and learn through discussion. The history of activist movements, specifically the ones that were centred on women interested me the most. The numbers that compare the amount of traumatic events women face vs men astounds me personally. I think that this topic was especially interesting, considering that our class is made of only…

Over the course of studying E214 I have thought greatly about my own practice working as an HLTA in a mainstream primary school, where I mainly work with children that experience barriers to learning. These barriers are due to the children having special educational needs or due to having English as an additional language. I now question whether the children I work with are part of a system that has created othering and if through them being othered they included as fully as possible or are they still subject to exclusion through the barriers they experience when accessing the national curriculum or through their progress not being as high as expected by society. (online unit 17) The focus of education appears to be about the grades and progress…

My experiences in P-12 with diverse student populations range from helping students who are dealing with severe issues of poverty when I was a part of the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program at my local Friendly House, to also dealing with students who were on IEPs for dyslexia, ADHD, ADD, Autism, and mood disorders, such as, depression and anxiety while in my FEEP program. I also had students while in my FEEP program who had behavioral issues and had to be placed on behavioral plans. What I learned from my experiences is that it is important to treat every student equally. To never listen to “Oh, they are the bad kid” because sometimes all students need is someone to believe in them and give them a new start. All of these students were capable…

Upon reflection of the EDF5141 Health unit. I believe it has assisted me in gaining some skills which will result in helping me reach my goals as a teacher. These goals I have for myself align with two Australian Professional Teaching Standards (APST) by the AITSL. These include ‘knowing the content and how to teach it’ and ‘plan for and implement effective teaching and learning’. ‘Knowing the content and how to teach it’ is a standard from the Professional Knowledge section and talks about the knowledge you have for the subject and understanding how it should be taught which suits the learning style of the students whilst aligning with the Australian government's requirements.…

For this reflective journal I have chosen to reflect on the changes that have occurred throughout my placement, and how this has impacted my learning. I have been very blessed this semester to have a very stimulating and informational placement, however changes that occurred at my placement organization has undeniably impacted my learning. Approximately 6 months into my placement, my supervisor, Hadiya, chose to leave my placement organization, Harmony House, to move onto other job opportunities. Hadiya’s absence has impacted my ability to learn in my placement, however the impact has been largely positive. Due to Hadiya leaving Harmony House, I was able to gain another supervisor, Caitlin, and she acts as the housing advocate at Harmony House.…

As we all know, the final Unit assignment is a personal reflection about what I’ve learned and who I am as a writer. In my opinion, only talking about everything I learned can be really a boring thing, I prefer to talk more about myself, my changes throughout the semester.
