I know that a man reputation during this era is a major part of society, but for him not to be able to trust his son so bad that he had to send someone to spy on him shows that Laertes must have done something really bad in the past for them not to have any line of trust emunating within their relationship. It would either be that Laertes has done something really bad, or that maybe Polonius is just plain paranoid. If such is the case then he must be a really annoying kind of perso. And like I said, the issue of trust is really going to be a large theme in this play, because first we have the trust between Old Hamlet, and Hamlet, and the mistrust between Hamlet and his uncle and even his mother, and now we have another relationship of mistrust developing within Polonius and Laertes.
