This semester, Fall 2015, is the end of my Humanities Honour Program. It has been a meaningful two years with Professor Lindahl and Professor Movassat. In this class, I have learned a lot of knowledge on the topics humanities. Humanities are very important because they had a great impact on today’s society. William Lund once said that “We study the past to understand the present; we understand the present to guide the future.” Without the knowledge of humanities, we won 't be able to communicate with people and understand the world. I turned from knowing nothing about humanities into a knowledgeable person today, being thankful to this class. Materials were sometimes hard but it was worth it after all. So what is Humanities really mean? Humanities …show more content…

For example, he was a diplomatic representative during the disagreement between Florence and Pisa about the conflict of military. He comes into contact with some of the powerful rulers, which allow him to observe their ways for gaining and maintaining political authority. Later on, he wrote a book called “The Prince,” discussed his philosophy about how immoral politician uses merciless, self serving cunning attitude to gain absolute power. In the book, Machiavelli described how to use different methods like in an immoral, evil or cruel ways to preserve political power. On the other hand, as he explained that good rulers have to learn not to be good, they have to set aside qualities of honesty and kindness in order to remain the stability of political power. In words, a prince possesses negative quality is more likely to win over regime. Machiavelli’s philosophy inspired me on how to be a good leader. On August 18, 2015, a financial crisis named “2015 Stock Market Selloff,” happened and people believed that this crisis was on the cusp of a Great Global Depression. The stock market almost crashed due to the economy decline in China. This financial crisis was very similar, except it was not as severe as the Great Depression incident. Out of all the historical events we learned in Humanities, I chose this topic because I like to know how the stock market and business finance function. That is also one of the reasons why I major in finance. Besides the recent financial crisis, there was also another crisis in the year of 2007 called the Great Recession. The 2012 article, “My Gloriously Useless Degrees In the Humanities”, focuses on the unstable nature of the job market, and its contribution towards the negative outlook on arts/humanities degrees. This article comes one year after the occupy wall street movements, people during this time were angry, and questioned the distribution of wealth in America. The author, Katrin Park, does not seek to answer the questions brought upon by the Occupy movement, but rather she recognizes that her argument has a platform, and that it may resonate with a similar audience. To create a foundation for her argument, Park displays her familiarity with the Kairos in which her article is born out of. I found her establishment of the articles’ kairos in paragraph…

Niccolò Machiavelli and Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca went through different experiences that led them to have their own perspectives in human nature and create their ideals for good governance. The simple fact that Cabeza de Vaca was unfortunate enough to have a hard time throughout the expedition made him more open minded about human nature, while Machiavelli had a set idea of what human nature was and how it ties to good governance. Machiavelli's view on human nature is the same as what is a good governance a good leader and a good human being is someone who knows how to be respected and feared without being hated and how that leads to have the people the Prince governs happy and on his side. Cabeza de Vaca has a more down to earth view on human nature but that differs…
