Testing for anemia is one reason a physician may have a patient get a red blood cell count done. The first test used to diagnose anemia is a complete blood count or CBC. Anemia is a condition that develops when your blood doesn’t have enough healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin which is a main part of RBC and binds oxygen. Having abnormal RBC’s can cause your body not to get enough oxygen. A main symptom of anemia is fatigue which comes from other organs in the body not getting what they need to function correctly. …show more content…
RBC’s may decrease or be faulty because of the lack of vitamins or minerals the body needs in order for the cells to function as needed. A serious condition that can come along with faulty RBC’s is sickle cell anemia. Sickle cell anemia is an inherited disorder that mainly African Americans and Hispanic Americans are diagnosed with. The red blood cells become deformed and start to break down too rapidly causing oxygen not to get to the body’s other organs. The deformed cells take the shape of a crescent and can also get stuck in smaller blood vessels 4 which in return causes pain. Iron-deficiency anemia occurs because of the lack of the mineral iron in the body. The body needs iron to make hemoglobin which is the part of the RBC that transports oxygen to other organs. Iron-deficiency can be caused by a diet that lacks iron this happens especially with infants, children, teens, vegans and vegetarians. This type of anemia occurs within woman mainly because of menstruation and blood loss that happens during their cycle. Even certain drugs, foods and caffeinated drinks may cause an iron-deficiency in the body. Anemia is tested for many causes so while being tested for anemia you may also be tested for certain conditions such as kidney failure, lead poisoning (in children) and lack of vitamins in the body such as B12 and folic
