Introduction
The News article “Recovered Memory Murder Case Unravels”, was been written by Dan Morain and published by the Los Angeles Times on Christmas day in 1995 is one of the articles that exposed the controversies in whether recovered repressed memories are real, authentic, and can be counted upon in cases of criminal convictions and prosecutions. The article also demonstrates how frail a memory can be and how misinformation can contribute to a construct and formation of false memory. in 1989 where he was been accused by his grown-up daughter, Eileen Franklin-lipsker, about 30 year old, of sexual abuse and murder of Susan Kay Nason—a childhood girlfriend of Eileen who was 8 years old as at the time she was sexually abused and murdered. Franklin was been accused to have committed the assault and murder in 1969, over 20 years ago from the date of accusation.
The impressing aspects of the issue were: (a) it was Franklin’s own daughter, Eileen, who provided the major evidence. (b) Eileen was only 8 years old as at the time she witnessed the assault and murder of Susan. (c) Since the day of witnessing the assault and murder of Susan by Franklin, Eileen’s memory was been repressed. (d) The repressed memory surfaced intact, but gradually, due to external stimuli confronted by Eileen and (e) Eileen’s “master story” of the murder and assault of Susan was been believed my majority of people including the jury and the court which caused the former firefighter, Franklin, to be convicted and prosecuted in 1990.
