Action Research Proposal Aaron Wilson EDU-520 SNHU 02/27/2016 Introduction According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, recess is defined as “a suspension of business or procedure often for rest or relaxation.” A prime example of this definition is that of children playing at recess at school each day. It is coming to a point where many schools don’t allow for a recess period during the school day, or they frown upon it heavily, as many curriculums now require so much of students that there are not enough minutes and hours in the school day to get everything done.…

Mark Bauerlein and Sandra Stotsky write in “Why Johnny Won’t Read,” that the public is at fault for the widening gap between males and female’s educational reading and learning. Males are decreasing at a faster rate than girls, because books in school contain less “adventure tales, war, sports, historical nonfiction […] and strong and active male role models,” and more relationships and fantasy. Adventure tales, war, and sports each contain traits that excite and intrigue boys. Bauerlein and Stotsky mention that girls have interest in both boy and girl topics (Mark Bauerlein and Sandra Stotsky). The K-12 education system is becoming more like an uneducational system for boys.…

I believe that interscholastic athletic programs are an extension of the classroom. Although academics come first in the secondary school system, the lessons that can be taught and learned from athletics cannot be duplicated anywhere else in the school environment. Sportsmanship, teamwork, and perseverance are just a few of the multitude of life lessons that can be learned through involvement in high school athletics. My expectations for our programs are lofty, not necessarily in term of wins and losses but in terms of building programs, being passionate about our sports and in doing things the right way, all the time. The wins and losses will take care of themselves.…

Since I can remember, withholding recess in elementary seemed like the number one consequence teachers used when a student broke a rule. This was devastating to me because like all other children, I loved going outside to play. When I came across this article that devastating childhood memory came back and I knew I had to read it.…

Walking through the halls of an elementary school, I could only hear the sound of my footsteps. When I stepped outside to the playground, the leaves were flying in the wind and the birds were singing, not a child to be seen. I wondered where the children are and why is it so silent. Boys are less emotionally connected to school than girls. In addition to the higher number of male dropouts, boys in high school are more likely to report not liking school, and are greatly outnumbered by girls in almost every extracurricular activity except sports, which may suggest to some that many boys are highly engaged in their high school years. Some researchers believe that the fact that most teachers are women, who often lack training about special educational needs of boys, contributes significantly to boys’ disengagement (Piechura-Couture, Heins, & Tichenor,…
