Reasons Why Students Dropout In The United States

“Every year, over 1.2 million students drop out of high school in the United States alone. That’s a student every 26 seconds, or 7,000 students a year (DoSomething.Org).” Too many students every year drop out of school for many reasons. Three factors that are a huge reason why students dropout are, difficulties in brain-based learning, dysfunctional home life, and exposure to stress or trauma. These factors are very important to all school settings. If teachers can stop and change the mind of one student, then the statistics of students dropping out could be way less. Brain-based learning according to The Glossary of Education Reform is, “…teaching methods, lesson designs, and school programs that are based on the latest scientific research …show more content…
This can become a difficult situation, but if teachers host open houses, and conferences the teacher will be able to recognize which parents want the best for their children and which parents feel that their lives are more important. Sometimes, having those students’ teacher conferences can help the parents get involved more. By having the parents sit down and look at what the child is learning and the goals they set out, may help the parents realize they need to help out anyway they can.
If a parent won’t help out at all they student comes to school with dirty clothes, no lunch, no backpack or doesn’t show up at all regularly, then the teacher needs to file Educational Neglect. In North Dakota, there is a form called “960(Nd.org).” This form is made to help students who need certain educational needs and the parents will not allow these needs to be addressed. Some students may think that if a family member dies, or divorce happens then it is that child’s responsibility to take care of the entire family. Some students drop out just to support their family and get a job to help pay bills. Students need to realize that their education is the most important thing in their lives right now. Getting a good education can help start his or her family to get out of poverty. Teachers need to recognize when a student has too much on their plate. Some ways to help is by lessening the workload of that student. Assign half of the problems instead of the entire page. By doing these little things it can help the student stay in school but also help support their
