Is he Gar Castle or is he Dr. Cedric Elton? The question is vivid in the minds of the people reading Rog Phillips’ “The Yellow Pill”. In “The Yellow Pill”, a character named Gerald Bocek questions Dr. Elton’s perception of reality by trying to convince him that they are in space instead of Earth. It is evident that the setting is on Earth; therefore, Dr. Elton’s reality is the truth.
Dr. Elton says to his receptionist, Helena Fitzroy, “They almost triple the strength of nerve currents from end organs. What results is that reality practically shouts down any fantasy insertions.” Taking the yellow pill causes the brain to go through thoughts of reality and fantasies and separate them. This statement is questionable because there are so many pills that “regular” people like Jerry know and take. Psychiatrists, doctors, and other people dealing with medicine are not the only ones who know what certain pills do. Some of those pills are Tylenol, Motrin, Advil, and et al; it is known by most that these three pills can help relieve pain and is taken for that very reason. Dr. Elton is so entangled in his suspicions that his brain cannot even conceive Jerry would know of the pill. Most people take pills, so it is possible that Jerry knows about the yellow pill and what it does. His knowing the location could simply be a good guess; it freaks Dr. Elton out due to its accuracy only. Dr. Cedric Elton is a confused man that, at the time, is not able to think the circumstances through and ends up having hallucinations like Jerry did. The space setting is not reality, but a way to escape its grasps. People lose sight of their true reality and go into a fake one when they are skeptical and filled to the bone with doubt. A person’s perception can change another person’s in a blink of an eye, making them go into a turmoil
