Origin Stories A creation story is any story that tells of a creation, these stories can be as specific as the creation of a new invention or they can be as broad as the creation of everything (Creation Story Definition). Many creation stories have points that are very similar and point out that it is very possible that many of these events are true since they are in common. There are also many differences in these stories as well. This paper however is going to detail the similarities and differences between the Native American creation story of the Navajo “Haijiinei” to the creation story of the Bible which is detailed in the book of Genesis.…

“The World on the Turtle’s Back” by the Iroquois Tribe is a creation myth. Joseph Campbell classified the four functions of a myth: metaphysical, to instill awe; sociological, to support customs; cosmological, to explain the world and the unexplained; and pedagogical, to guide people. This story fulfills each of these functions when the woman falls through a hole in the sky world and the earth is created by dirt from the bottom of the ocean. Her descendants each have a part of creating the customs and the earth as it is now. One of the most important functions that this story has is sociological, which explains the customs that they have.…
In his book How to Read the Jewish Bible, Marc Brettler (2005) introduces the reader to the Bible employing the methods modern biblical scholars use to understand the Hebrew scriptures. How successfully he does this depends not only on the content of his book, but also on the intended audience. In order to ascertain how well Brettler accomplished the intended goals of the book, one must first decipher what the goals of the work are. In the preface to the paperback edition of the book Brettler asserts that he wishes to introduce the Jewish Bible to a wider audience than is normally brought into the circle of biblical scholars (Brettler, 2005, vii).…
Hesiod 's Theogony and the Book of Genesis, came from two very distinct cultures. Hesiod’s Theogony is the Greek account of the creation of earth and humankind, while The Book of Genesis is the first book of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament, which also stands as an account of creation. There are a number of profound similarities and differences between the creation stories contained in Hesiod 's Theogony and the biblical book of Genesis. The similarities and differences between these works may reflect a great cultural similarity between human kind, and can reflect social understandings and interpretations of the outside world.…
Long before the European race pierced through the North American continent, the indigenous people of what is now the “United States” lived in peace and harmony. Just like most other civilizations of their time, this broad group of indigenous natives created their own creation myths and stories to ease their worried minds of the past and future. Though there are hundreds of creation myths still cycling through cultures in today’s society, the Natives of North America have very distinct features that can’t compare to others. Unlike religious ideas in the east, Native American creation stories typically center around land manipulation, birth, the importance of animals, and the act of bravery.…
Normally, as someone who is highly invested in the idea of science and creation, there is a lack of understanding when it comes to thinking about the different myths of creation. For me, creation all started when a group of molecules happened to join together and eventually evolved into the many organisms that are seen every day. It never occurred to me that there is such a difference between different creation myths. During the first couple of weeks in the semester it became clear that creation is rooted in many cultures in diverse ways.…
I don’t remember ever asking where it all came from. I grew up in what was, for the most part, a highly educated and progressive environment with little exposure to much else – I remember many happy hours spent with those glossy DK children’s books and I’m sure I came across early humans at some point – but I don’t know that I was aware of anything but evolution until middle school. I had been introduced to the creation story from the bible in school, but with it came various Native American creation stories and so Adam and Eve were shelved in my own mind with Cinderella, Zeus, and King Arthur. It wasn’t until the eighth grade, probably, that I gave creationism as a theory any kind of genuine thought. I happened to overhear that another student had taken on the evolution vs. creation debate for an English paper.…
There are many beliefs about the origin of the universe. Many people believe that the world was created differently which creates a countless number of worldviews. For some, they refer to the Bible to get a better understanding of how the world came to be. The first two chapters of Genesis explain this belief. For others, they may choose to take a more scientific approach and attribute the creation to chemical and biological means.…
I walked into my class out of breath after climbing three sets of stairs only to find myself without a place to sit. My seat had been taken by someone else. Fortunately for me, one of my classmates was absent, so I sat in her place. The next day the same thing happened and again another girl was absent so I sat in her place.…
Jarriett Hicks Response 1 The Creation Accounts were pretty interesting to read, since I have never read any creation stories besides Genesis. Seneca and Thanksgiving Address are really intriguing as I question the authenticity of the many creation stories worldwide. Are all the stories created based off of one person’s assumption and passed on for centuries? Where is the truth? Despite my epistemological questions, I can say that Thanksgiving Address appears to be the most logical of all stories because of its rhetoric “Now our minds are one” creates a sense of awareness for all cultures, societies and beliefs.…
The Hebrew Bible is the sacred book of the Hebrew people, and the book of Genesis is the original book of the Old Testament. The Hebrew Bible is the world’s oldest text that appears from the eleventh and twelfth centuries BCE. The book tells a story of God’s creation of the universe in seven days and the establishment of human civilization. In this short persuasive essay, I am going to discuss Genesis I, and want to talk about the Hebrew people and their significant belief in God and creation. The Hebrew society believes that their God is omnipotent, omniscient and loving.…
Creation versus evolution is a world renowned topic that has been argued upon for an extended period of time, by a wide collection of people. There are many people with very different facts on each, but in the end it is still an ongoing debate. Scholars for Creationism have their arguments, but scientists also have their arguments. There are things that have resemblance for both, but they can’t seem to come up with a compromise of where the first atom came from.…
In my birth experience interviews I included myself as a first natural birth experience in the hospital here in Phoenix, then I interviewed my sister-in-law in Italy, Genova, as a second C-Section birth experience with an epidural, and third I interviewed a friend, Anne, here in Phoenix of her fourth birth experience, home birth. I was 27 years old when I had my daughter Sara on Sept. 8 1998. I came from Sicily that I was four months pregnant. I broke the water around 3:15 AM, woke up my husband and took a quick shower, I had no pain yet. We went to the Paradise Valley hospital and the pain started feeling quick and strong, I was pacing, my mother in law told me about the epidural and advised not to ask for it, for she thought was…
My origin Story Do you feel how hard is it when you forced to leave your own country? Since we born, the process of changes and challenges starts taking effects on us physically and emotionally. In our life, we never expect every thing run in good shape or smoothly. For example, we never thought that one day we as a family are going to live in The United States. Since leaving my country, Iraq, which is the most horrible thing in my memory, I have gone through enough challenges not only myself but even for my family as well that converted our way of life.…
