What is the one thing you do when things are down, you become determined to finish what you started. The theme of the song “Hall of fame” and Raymond's Run is determination. The story Raymond’s run was written by: Toni Cade Bambara. The main characters are Hazel and Raymond, Hazel is a very fast runner. She is one of the best in the city. Every year she wins the race and is very cocky this year. Her best opponent Gretchen, gave a very good run for her money and it was a neck to neck race, but Hazel won by a hair. When Hazel was running, she saw raymond running with his arms dangling down to his hips and she felt bad that Raymond never got a chance to get a medal. So, she decided to coach Raymond in track. “And as anyone can tell you, I’m the fastest thing on two feet.” (Page 26 line 20) has a similar demeanor as the line in the song “Yeah, You could be the greatest You can be the best” because it shows how you have to be determined and confident to be great. Hall of fame is a song with the message of determination and confidence which is very alike to Raymond's run. Also, the quote from Raymond’s Run ‘There is no track meet where I don't win the first place medal’ (Page 26 line 25), is very similar to the line in the song “Do it for your people, Do it for your pride, How you ever gonna know if you never even try?” This because both of the quotes are meant to show how if you are determined to be the best, you can achieve whatever you want. This is relatable to Raymond’s Run because Squeaky was very determined and confident that she would win the race. To add, this quote. “But once I spread my fingers in the dirt and crouch over the Get on Your Mark, the dream goes and I am solid again and am telling myself, Squeaky you must win, you must win, you are the fastest thing in the world, you can even beat your father up Amsterdam if you really try.” , is very alike to the line in the song “You could be the hero You could get the gold Breaking all the records they thought, never could be broke”, because I believe that the songwriter wanted the message to be “ If you are determined to do something, you can do it” which is a very big universal message in Raymond’s Run. The last quote, from Raymond's Run “ The big kids call me mercury, because i’m the swiftest thing in the neighborhood”, and the line from the song “Yeah, You could be the greatest You can be the best” because both show confidence and determination. Finally, the song “Hall of fame” by: The script and the short story “ Raymond’s Run” by: Toni Cade Bambara have the same theme of
