Ralph is the athletic, charismatic protagonist of Lord of the Flies. He is elected the leader of the boys at the beginning of the novel which makes him the face of their civilization and order. He is perfect for this role because the other boys really like him and he strongly believes that there should be order in their small society. This belief is the opposite of Jack’s which I think makes Jack his rival. While most of the other boys are only playing and having fun in the water, Ralph sets out to build huts and thinks of ways in which they could increase their chance of survival.
