Racism in the film industry has caused many minority actors to get very few leading roles in movies. It is true that there are some minority actors’ who have obtained larger leading roles, but many of these roles required that specific race. Sadly today there are still directors who look over a minority’s skilled and talented abilities and cast them based on their ethnicity. All ethnicities have their own stereotypes, but the minorities such as Blacks, Asians, and Hispanics are the main races that are affected the most by stereotypes. This quote contradicts the statement mentioned by the studio executives which claimed an African-American film “too black” to be worthy of a large production. Research shows that predominantly black films actually have better domestic returns on investments than predominantly white films. If black films are creating high domestic returns why is it that directors and producers fail to produce and invest in black films? Here is more research that pertains to gross production of black films. Sankofa had just a $1 million budget yet produced a gross domestic return of $2.4 million. The Color Purple had a $15 million budget yet had a domestic gross return of $96 million. Precious had a $12 million budget yet had a gross production return of $47 million ( Bambrick 4). Shonda Rimes who is the director of Grey’s Anatomy held her own color blind auditions for Grey’s Anatomy. For she wanted the show to not be defined by what color the actor’s skin was, but to show that we live in a post Civil War time where diversity lives (Harrison 1). Rimes decisions made a positive difference in television, and Grey’s Anatomy is actually one of the most watched television shows in America. Sandra Oh portrays an Asian character who happens to be one of the lead characters. As a result, Oh received a Golden Globe Award for that role. By using color blind casting the audience can truly see how great an actor really is. Grey’s Anatomy has won 61 awards and has 171 nominations. With such great success, maybe other shows should use color blind casting so that viewers can easily relate to the actors. The more diversity
in a television show means more viewers, and more views means more ratings, and more ratings means more money for the network and television show. One would think that movie productions and directors would have a diverse cast since the gross production is high.
