A Quinceañera was the great transition to adulthood for my best friend. My cousin was thrown into growing up at a young age when both of his parents passed away. My immediate family prides themselves in hard work and ethic. So my transition into adulthood was not a grand party nor has it been a traumatic. Since hard work is my family motto, my transition into adulthood has been becoming a productive member of society and working. The Quintanilla’s Cultural Family Assessment How does one define culture? In our readings culture is defined as a set of shared views and adaptive behaviors that are derived from a variety of context (Plumer, 2013). When assessed properly a culture assessment could shine the light on a family’s culture norms, values, beliefs, and patterns of thinking, which then could help us heal our patients holistically (Friedman, Bowden, & Jones, 2003, p. 230). On topic, the family we will be assessing was proud and preservative of their culture.…

Latin American culture regards a “Quinceañera” as an adolescent girl’s entrance into womanhood at the tender age of 15 (“quince años” meaning 15 years of age/15 years old). Traditionally, this coming-of-age celebration was intended “to introduce girls to society and signify they were ready for marriage” (Quinceañera: Coming of age in a bad economy by Nancy Lofholm of The Denver Post). Nowadays, this momentous occasion recognizes girls as women who are capable of wearing makeup and dating.…

Five years ago, most of us had probably never heard of quinoa. The first time I read (and mispronounced) the word was a couple years ago, as I scrolled through Pinterest looking for healthy recipes that I had never tried before. Back then, [kee-nwa] was just an unknown grain found only in some whole-food specialty stores, but it has now risen to stardom as one of those superfoods that anyone who says they know anything about health puts into their regular rotation of meals. Today, quinoa is very trendy and is talked about like anything else in mainstream culture. Just like music trends start with local bands and then make it to the national radio, quinoa went from being an underground “foodie” grainmovement to a mainstream ingredient endorsed…

When a girl celebrates her Quinceañera, it signifies the girl becoming a “woman” and soon could leave the comfort of the home to make her own family. It is supposed to mean that she is to receive a family, her husband, and children. Yet for me that is impossible because of the news I had received two days before my “special” party. I remember the day so clear as it was yesterday. I remember that my cousins would be arriving soon to help my parents to prepare the food and then get the tables.…

I remember that around that time, I was starting to truly understand what my parents were up to. Despite what I was shown on my first day at work (which I remember only through videos and stories), I was actually learning about the business model that they had created. My parents had created an Empire. My mom played the observant, responsible, hardworking and perfectionist role in the story of our family’s rise to the top, whereas my dad opted for the role as the reliable jokester, who charmed the customers into coming back. I may not have realized how impeccable that strategy was at the time, but for a 3 year old, I like to think that I learned a lot from them anyway.…
