In Thomas Foster’s, How to Read Literature Like a Professor he explains five useful points that help to recognize and understand literature. The first chapter covers the topic of quest. In order for literature to be a quest there is 5 points to consider. 1. A quester 2. A place to go 3. A reason to go there 4. Challenges and trials during it 5. A real reason to go there. It is important to note that the real reason for the quest is always self knowledge. John Green’s Paper Towns, which was later made into a movie demonstrates a quest in literature. 1. He believes every time people eat or drink together it is communion. He continues to explain that eating together is a way of saying I like you, I am with you, we form a community. People don’t generally invite people to dinner if they don’t like them and if they are invited they will turn down the invite. Veronica Roth’s Divergent series has a few meal scenes. One that stands out most is in the scene. There is a group of newbies to the Dauntless. They just changed their outfits to all black to match the community. Tris (Main character) and another transfer walk up to what appear to be the only two empty seats at the table. Next to them is Four, a man that was part of the Dauntless when they arrived. The two girls begin to joke around with the boys on the other side of the table about their previous factions. Four jumps in the conversation, explaining he doesn’t want to hear about their born factions they are now part of Dauntless so talk about Dauntless. Tris asks Four, “Were you a transfer?” Four comes off extremely rough replying to her question with a question, “What makes you think you can talk to me?” Four then turns the other way to talk to another Dauntless. Then the transfer explain to Tris that Four was top of his class which means he is a transfer. This scene is important because at this time it seems that Four is a big bad guy and not very nice. Later in the book Four and Tris become extremely close, and practically in a relationship. They let each other into their own thoughts (literally) and help each other to grow into better
