Qualitative and Quantitative Pleasures
Qualitative and Quantitative pleasures come out of Utilitarianism. Utilitarianism can often be thought of as dangerous and wretched because it allows for seriously immoral acts to take place. Utilitarianism argues for maximum pleasure to take place, but in doing so can allow such acts as rape, torture etc. Therefore many disregard the act because of its possible immoral acts that could take place. However the Philosopher Mill has come up with two different levels of pleasure, qualitative and quantitative, to determine which acts are worth pursuing. Utilitarianism is an “act as to maximize or further pleasure for everyone.” Jeremy Bentham, a philosopher and creator of the Hedonic Calculus argues that there are only two masters when it comes to maximizing happiness, pleasure v.s. pain. However, according to his calculus whoever is receiving more pleasure than pain, by all means should continue the act, even if it is immoral. For example, if a sadist is torturing an innocent person and is receiving more pleasure than the innocent person is receiving pain then, according to Bentham it is okay for the sadist to continue because that would mean maximum happiness has been achieved. Qualitative pleasures posses long term values and effects. If the sadist tortures so many people, overtime they can possibly acquire knowledge about the body, the muscles, bones, how the body reacts under certain situations etc. the list goes on. Learning about the body and acquiring skills in doing so would be considered a qualitative pleasure because it is valuable long term information that should be pursued according to mill in the sense that quatative pleasures are the only pleasure that should be pursued.
