This essay analyses the meaning of abuse, different forms of abuse, how a child’s health and development can be damaged physical and psychologically and the significant harm caused to the abused child. Abuse may be deliberate or by failure to safeguard children in other words, neglect. Child abuse occurs when individuals, institutions do or fail to do, which directly or indirectly harms children prospects of safe and healthy development (Beckett, 2003). The different forms of abuse are physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, emotional abuse and indirect abuse.

According to the case study above, the doctor has concerns about Helen’s welfare because of the bruises he saw in her legs and thighs. The doctor discusses the issue with his other colleagues and Helen’s mother. He refers Helen to Local Authority Children Social Care and he followed up in writing within 48 hours. The social worker and manager acknowledge receipt of referral and have to make decision within one working day. They will establish if an initial assessment is required, in Helen’s case it was.
If there is no further action, feedback will be provided to Helen’s mother and referrers. When a decision is made to conduct a full assessment of needs, it has to be completed within seven working days from the date of referrer.
