All modern day organisation focus on developing and retaining a competitive advantage over their competitors and this can be attained by SHRM. Employees are able to help achieve the competitive advantage as they play an important role in fostering and creating a culture of innovation within the organisation. By allowing this allows the organisation to differ from its competitors and contributes to the organisations success. This can further contribute to an organisations competitive advantage and success. This is done through the retention strategy, which involves 5 factors. They include flexible work arrangements, interesting and challenging work, good manger/supervisor, reasonable pay/salary and autonomy and empowerment. (Nankervis, A et al. 2013). If organisations follow these factors they will not only enhance employees productivity but will reduce the staff turnover rate. If used effectively SHRM can foster a collaborative working environment that drives the organization towards performance excellence(Wise Geek, 2015). Flexible Work Arrangements that are available at Qantas include; Part-time, Job-Share, Home based work, Flexible use of Annual Leave, Twentieth Days (accrued rostered days) Personal/Carer’s Leave, Long service leave, Bereavement and compassionate leave and Leave without pay. As at 31 March 2012, 29% of females were undertaking flexible work arrangements. (Qantas, 2015) Hence this shows how adopting retention strategies are an advantage, as it will allow for existing employees to improve worker productivity and satisfaction.
