This morning the focus of my meditation was on Tamar the beautiful young virgin daughter of the King David. No doubt she was waiting for the man she trusted God would one day bring to her… I was touched by the tragic irony of Tamar’s dress. She ripped the fabric of her robe as surely as Amnon ripped the fabric of her honour. What touched me most was the inappropriate response of her brother Absalom. No doubt he loved his sister, but here’s what he said to Tamar, “Be quiet and don’t take things to heart”(2 Sam 13:20).…
Public speaking can be very hard for some people, and it can make a huge first impression. In the book An Essential Guide to Public Speaking by Quentin Schultze it goes deeper than just talking to a regular audience. It talks about being a Christian and handling public speaking. This is a great book to learn about how to be a public speaker and a Christian but not to lose your audience by talking too much about God or not enough. When someone says a free society in public speaking it opens, it appeals to a lot more people.…
In many of the anthropology pieces that have been read and critiqued in class, the topic of language usually comes up in a way to praise or reject that claims that are being made. Anthropologist must constantly be aware of their word choices because they have the power to change the whole connotation of their findings when language is used a certain way, omitted, or modified in translation. One of the first pieces that this discussion of language came up in was in the piece Righteous Dopefiend by Philippe Bourgois and Jeff Schonberg. There were many criticisms and questions regarding the effectiveness of omitting some of the language that the people who were part of their field study were using. The language was omitted because of the vulgar…
Ishmael Beah’s memoir A Long Way Gone is appropriate for the Sterling high school English IV curriculum because Beah makes use of the complexity of ideas and creates connections to the real world. Markedly, the use of the complexity of ideas makes the memoir well rounded, and better reading material than many other pieces. Accordingly, after Beah and his friends leave the first village after seeing it destroyed, they run into one problem: food.…
Just as the Party maintained their claims to power through the manipulation of historical fact, the PC Police manipulate language in order to achieve their goals. The dictionary definition of “violent” is: “using or involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something.” This clearly defines violence as a physical act that is deliberately inflicted upon someone with the intent of causing measurable physical harm. Under this traditional definition of violence, murder and war are violent; verbal slurs, rude utterances, and inadvertently offensive comments are not. However, the PC Police claim that these acts are also, in fact, violent, in a newspeak-esque redefinition of the term.…
Not everyone has the gift to speak, those who cannot express themselves by verbal means must find other ways in which they are to express themselves; some who cannot speak use sign language to communicate with those who are able while others may use writing to communicate. Although, these various forms of communication differ they all similarly end up being converted into words. People don't necessarily realize the importance of word they underestimate them using thing as they please never asking how when or why words function exactly the way they do. For centuries man has continued to create more and more words as well as various ways to use them. we don't know when words first starred for their debut exactly however it doesn't take much to…
Through Amy Tan’s book, The Joy Luck Club, I was made aware of the different “languages” people use with diverse groups in their lives. A person, whether they know it or not, speaks differently in different situations. While giving a speech, one may possibly use an increased vocabulary or a slower tone of voice. A person, when talking to friends may use a decreased vocabulary, quicken their pace, or abbreviate words. While we may be unaware that we constantly change the variations of our English, or another language, we have all been brought up to speak in this manner.…
Between cultures in different societies, a few concepts can't be translated. Some main reasons behind these occurrences are language barriers. Inside the memoir Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, the chinese idea of "loy luck" can't be translated. The lack of ability to decipher this idea due to language barriers is one of the primary themes of this novel since it powers the lack of comprehension between the girls and other people. The failure to decipher certain things causes a lack of ability to express emotions, false interpretation of others, and unwanted arguments in discussions.…
Language in still the ideal manner of communication in today’s culture. It can have immense power and the impact relies on how one wields it. The power of language can evolve ideas and beliefs into concrete reality. Changing one verb in a sentence, has the capability to change the whole meaning. The power to change one's perspective and opinions from a few words, is incredible.…
Language gives to you opportunity to share potential ideas to an audience or simply use your voice to advocate. Being able to express yourself intelligently and fluently is not only a vital role in a meaningful…
The art of language-Doublespeak As we all know that language is a kind of art, you can use different ways to express same meaning. For example, if you go to someone’s funeral, when you want to comfort the dead guy’s relatives, you can’t say, “die”, instead, you should say, “pass away”, these two words contains the same meaning but the second one is not as sensitive as the previous one, this is the power of words. Different expressions give listener different feelings. What people said contains not only one meaning is very common in our life, sometimes people use these words as a tool to mislead others, we call this conduct “doublespeak”. In the article “the world of double speak”, the crystal William Lutz defined doublespeak as language that seems to be used to communicate but really doesn’t, he said that “ Doublespeak is not a…
On a fourteen-hour plane ride on the first day of the new year, I passed through the skies of several countries, into various time zones, and over an ocean. The plane touched down, and I found myself with ten other University of Missouri students on the first day of our two-week service-learning experience in Chaing Rai, Thailand. Not only was I an ocean away, in another time zone, and fourteen hours away from America, but I was also standing still in a bustling airport full of audible sounds and written characters comprising of a language, and the language was not my own, nor did I know a single utterance of the language. Before the journey to Thailand, our service-learning group had several meetings about our worries and expectations of…
I like how you stated that “a language is not just random words that sound different than English,” I agree with you that a lot of people do not have an interest. If you go to other parts of the world, not only they speak their native language but other languages as well. For example, European counties speaks multiple languages including English. Thank you for sharing a little about your ethnic background. It is very interesting and I enjoy reading it.…
This is my conclusion, as well as, how I got there. 15 years ago the question “Do people see my work in the same light as I do?” Was irrelevant all that mattered was the fame and money, but with age comes the unquenchable want for wisdom and slowly this question grew from a little ant hill to mount Everest. Today I will give you my answer, but it is not scientifically proved or religiously written it is my thought. Perception of language comes from who we are as person I cannot fully explain it, but in short it’s determined by our gender, where we are from, how we interact and in general what makes us who we are. Everyone perceives the language I use in a different way and that’s what makes me…
from the work of Claude and Warren Weaver. Shannon in 1949; this three-part model was intended to capture radio and television transmission process. The three parts are: source, channel, and receiver. Shannon and Weaver also identify another component that can interfere while listening to a telephone call that is called noise. However, this model was adapted to human communication, and it has some useful parallels to public speaking.…
