In fact, on average, these occurrences were addressed three times per episode. One of these circumstances involved Karen’s daughter-in-law from her previous relationship who decides to point out the Hank is the father of Karen’s sisters baby on the way. This baby is an example of a risk of unprotected sex and per the operational definition, is characterized as a potential risk and responsibilities that comes with sex. Another circumstance that fits into the operational definition of risk and responsibilities involves Becca on her first day of school. When Becca was picking which seat to sit at during lunch she chose a table that was empty except for a young boy on the opposite end. After she sits down he advises her not to sit there. She replies “Why do you have the herp or something”. I found this to be pleasantly surprising and potentially beneficial to adolescents because I expected there to be none. This is important because The Social Learning Theory states that adolescent’s behaviors will be learned vicariously though observation and modeling of others. So, sexual risks and responsibilities concerns are very important to address. This shows that the overall pattern of the series involves some attempt to increase awareness regarding sexual health concerns and/or serious outcomes that can be a result of sexual activity. Something that could be harmful however to adolescents is how often sex is displayed on the show. According to the Drip Drop Theory, adolescents that watch this kind of show are getting this type of information get slowly instilled in their minds the concepts from the show and then start to think that that this kind of sexual behavior is the norm. Another potential harmful factor of Californication is that in puts certain Sexual Scripts in teenager’s minds that tell them what sexual encounters are like and how they should act.
