The debate over dress codes in schools has been going on for years and is still widely debated and talked about throughout the education systems. Both sides of the argument has its many supporters and also those who are against. There are additionally multiple pros and cons depending on what side you are looking at. Dress code violations in school are sometimes handled not well. The dress codes some schools have are harshly enforced towards the students. I believe that the enforcement over dress codes are harsh because the schools do not know how to properly handle the situations. It seems that multiple girls are the ones being victimized by dress code violations during school time. A reporter from The Atlantic addressed, “I’ve never seen a boy called out for his attire even though they also break the rules.” ( Zhou, 2015, para. 1) How many cases have you saw where a boy is being told that what he is wearing is not allowed? You probably have not heard of very many. Guys wear clothing that violates the school dress code rules as well, but seem to never be told what they are wearing is wrong. They wear their pants hanging low and tank tops showing shoulders where girls would not be able to wear and get away with, so why do girls get put on the spot. Schools are telling girls that they can not wear certain clothing items because it is sexual and distracts boys from class. We are in the twenty-first century, since when has “showing too much collarbone” or “too much shoulder” been considered sexual? Having the uniforms for school can make all of the students feel equal. Every single student in the school is pretty much wearing the same outfit. This means that there should not be dress code violations, and where one student is in trouble for what they are wearing but the same outfit worn by other student did not get into trouble. “With uniforms, there 's no discrimination because of what you 're wearing. Everyone is united under the same style.” (Meredith G. 2014, para. 2) This quote from a Teen Ink magazine article is true because the students are all equal with school uniforms. School uniforms can also help prevent gangs and gang related activities from happening at schools, may also help improve class attendance, and can help the schools to have more belonging and pride throughout the school. Even though uniforms in school has multiple advantages, the few disadvantages really bring the idea down. The problems with having school uniforms is that they take away the freedom for students to express themselves through their own clothing. The other problem is it takes money to get all of the uniforms for all of the students. Most schools will not be able to afford the uniforms as well as some parents to. Students grow from year to year, so the more they grow, the more money that needs to be put towards a new school uniform that fits. If enough money could be brought in, school uniforms could potentially help the dress
