Pros And Cons Of Animal Testing

This general and broad statement can be used in a lighthearted manner to, for example, discuss a mess stuffed into a closet instead of properly cleaned. On the contrary the simple phrase can refer to something grave. Animal testing is not often on the forefront of the average person's mind. No one thinks about the body count of rabbits killed in order to produce that tube of lipstick or the sounds of anguish from primates being tortured in order to further research in medicine. The darkness of animal testing is never thought about because it is hidden behind the appealing labels in the cosmetics aisle. The thoughts of animals being tortured is understandably quite …show more content…

The use of these alternatives can vary from medical training to cosmetic testing to scientific research. Some of these alternatives include cadavers, living human cells, human patient simulators, and models on the computer (“Animal Testing”). Obviously people training to be doctors or surgeons can not gain knowledge and experience solely through practice on a computer program and a cosmetics or health products company would not find it effective to test its products on actual human cadavers, but that is okay. There are so many different methods to use to replace animal testing and they are all so flexible and different. Besides the clear positive of using alternative methods for experimentation and testing because they are more humane, there are so many other advantages these alternatives have that make them undeniably more fit for the job. Animal testings are time consuming with just one simple test taking up to 3 years (“End Animal”). Adding to that these experiments and testings are extremely expensive and can cost up to millions of dollars unlike the many alternate methods. This money which has been estimated to reach about 16 billion a year is being taken from taxpayers pockets. Not only that, but much of the money obtained by health charities go straight to help fund these testings (“Animal Testing”). Maybe the biggest edge that these alternatives have on animals is the compared success rate between the

"A righteous man has regard the life of his animal..." Proverbs 12:10 (1). Not even the word of God has stopped the animal cruelty that occurs in labs across the world. Despite all the proof and moral evidence provided, scientists continue to use defenseless animals for not only experiments for the good of mankind, but also for cosmetics tests and other nonessential products. Not only are these acts morally wrong, but they also have been, on many occasions, proven to be ineffective, and even though there are better, safer ways to experiment, animal cruelty continues to be the first choice when testing products. While scientists continue to run experiments and tests on innocent creatures, people across the world acknowledge how awful it is.…

Testing on animals is also a lot more expensive and non-practical than alternative methods. (Animals In). “Some people, including some scientists object to the practice strictly on ethical and moral grounds, refuting or rejecting any scientific evidence that animal testing is helpful to humans.” (Judson 12). The question of whether if testing on animals is ethical and humane was raised and examined. Up until the 20th century, animal testing was looked at as ethical under any circumstances. It was assumed that animals feel very little to no pain and don’t have the same rights as humans. According to M.A. Fox, an ethical philosopher, “Animals do not have ‘rights’ equivalent to humans due to their exclusion from the human ‘moral community’” (Baier 137-138).…

The debate surrounding the use of invasive animal research has been ongoing throughout history. Proponents of the practice are quick to point out the multitude of benefits that have emerged from the practice such as the cures and vaccines to major diseases such as polio, and their capacity to continue to do so in the future. Opponents often claim that the moral status of these animals deem it morally impermissible to do any time of research that can harm them, no matter what the benefits for humans may be. This is especially true in the argument against invasive chimpanzee research. Chimps share similar genetics with humans and have been shown to exhibit an array of emotional responses similar to those of humans, but this does not necessarily…

Cheaper, more humane alternatives are possible for companies to experiment on while testing their products exist. Many makeup, skincare, and household products test on animals. Thousands of innocent animals are in labs everyday getting abused, killed, or put through pain without medication. There have been found other alternatives to use instead of testing on animals.
