Final Synthesis Paper
My journey as an early childhood education student at South Dakota State University has proved to be an exhilarating, inspiring, trying, and an eye opening experience. Originally when I started at South Dakota State University I was journalism major, but I recognized very quickly that I wasn’t truly passionate about writing. My true passion was working with children and their families. At the end of my freshman year I changed my major to early childhood education and the following semester is when my journey began. In many circumstances, teachers don’t recognize the impact they have on children years down the road, just the immediate results either it is academic improvement from tutoring or another service that is provided. Initially when I first began taking early childhood education courses I wasn’t completely aware of how important my role would be both inside and outside of the classroom and because of this I think my personal limits have become wider as I’ve gained a clearer understanding how to best serve children and their families. During my academic experience at South Dakota State University I’ve had the opportunity to be mentored by several different faculty and community members that work at different childcare facilities. If one professional can have that impact on a student like me, I pondered what this type of attention and encouragement could mean for a young child. I’ve established that it’s crucial for children to have a strong support system and encouragement during their early years when they’re constantly developing and learning new skills. The value and impact of developing a positive and supportive relationship with a young child is beyond measureable when I consider certain households that some children come from. If I can provide a secure and nurturing environment for the children under my care, there is nothing else I would rather do with my time as an easily childhood
