When Dr. Rosenthal was making different points about non-verbal communication, I could not help but to think back to my speech course. My speech professor stressed the importance non-verbal communication techniques. I can remember my first speech I gave for the class, I was extremely nervous. My heart was pounding, my palms were sweaty, and as I gave my speech I stuttered just about every other word. But with practice and constructive criticism from my professor, I become less nervous before/during my speeches. Another problem I had during my speech course was facial expressions. My professor would tell me that I looked uninterested in what I was speaking on, so that was an area that I had to improve on over time. The main point that was discussed on personal presentation was confidence. This is an area that I struggle with and that I have had to work on, especially when talking to someone in a professional setting, such as when I job shadowed. Personal appearance can contribute to personal presentation. If you dress in a comfortable, professional way, you will feel more confident in yourself. I know a lot of times I put pressure on myself to make sure I am wearing the correct outfit, that I get distracted and lose confidence in other areas. Also, the way you are dressed and look contributes to your body language. Dr. Rosenthal made a point that the person interviewing you for a potential program or job is going to base their first impression of you off of how you look. What you wear, your personal appearance, speaks volumes about yourself. The fifth and final topic is written communication skills. Writing is a strength of mine. I used to write all the time and my writing and English grades reflected it. Some of the points made on written communication were about grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. When writing a paper I try to do a rough draft before the final copy, I also get at least one other person to look over my final draft before submitting a paper.
