On Wednesday, September 30, 2015, Dr. David Rosenthal, Chair of the Healthcare Management Program, came to talk to our BCE class about professional communication. Dr. Rosenthal touched base briefly on five different professional communication skills/topics. The five topics were as followed: verbal communication, non-verbal communication, written communication, personal presentation, and personal appearance. While Dr. Rosenthal was discussing each topic in my head I reflected on my own personal experiences with each one. As he made points about each topic, I reflected on whether or not I was confident in that area, or I need improvement in that area. Also, because I have taken a speech course before, a lot of the information was familiar …show more content…
When Dr. Rosenthal was making different points about non-verbal communication, I could not help but to think back to my speech course. My speech professor stressed the importance non-verbal communication techniques. I can remember my first speech I gave for the class, I was extremely nervous. My heart was pounding, my palms were sweaty, and as I gave my speech I stuttered just about every other word. But with practice and constructive criticism from my professor, I become less nervous before/during my speeches. Another problem I had during my speech course was facial expressions. My professor would tell me that I looked uninterested in what I was speaking on, so that was an area that I had to improve on over time. Every time I speak I try to use good posture and hand gestures to show interest in the …show more content…
The main point that was discussed on personal presentation was confidence. This is an area that I struggle with and that I have had to work on, especially when talking to someone in a professional setting, such as when I job shadowed. Personal appearance can contribute to personal presentation. If you dress in a comfortable, professional way, you will feel more confident in yourself. I know a lot of times I put pressure on myself to make sure I am wearing the correct outfit, that I get distracted and lose confidence in other areas. Also, the way you are dressed and look contributes to your body language. Dr. Rosenthal made a point that the person interviewing you for a potential program or job is going to base their first impression of you off of how you look. What you wear, your personal appearance, speaks volumes about yourself. The fifth and final topic is written communication skills. Writing is a strength of mine. I used to write all the time and my writing and English grades reflected it. Some of the points made on written communication were about grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. When writing a paper I try to do a rough draft before the final copy, I also get at least one other person to look over my final draft before submitting a paper. It helps me to read my paper out loud to see if what I am saying makes sense. Like Dr. Rosenthal said, we tend to

I strongly dislike public speaking, but I am working to improve my skills in that area because I know how much it’s needed in the workplace. There were many of my classmates who are graduating at the same time as me and it seems like we all have a lot to improve. We need more practice and more willing to put what we have learned in the past into practice. I know that during our college careers, we have heard from different people about what we should do when we are giving a presentation, but it looks like we did not take it seriously and now we are facing the consequences of giving a presentation like a high school student and not as an almost professional…

The first thing I noticed in my video is that I say “umm” way too often. The first time I said, “umm” in my speech was at 0:10 and continued to say it throughout my whole entire speech. I found it quite annoying when listening to myself. It is my go to word when I am nervous and it is something I really need to work on. The second thing I noticed is that I don’t look professional when giving my speech because instead of standing up straight and tall, I lean to the side and kind of stick my hip out.…

Practice makes perfect as everyone has heard this saying before. In the future, I plan on practicing my speeches more by speaking in front of a mirror over and over again to give myself the impression of what I look like when speaking in front of a group of people. Practicing in front of a mirror over and over again will also help me memorize my speech more instead of relying on my note card as often, giving me more confidence while speaking. I tend to use my note card as a comforting thing when I get nervous and forget what I am about to say. It gives me the chance to collect my thoughts and remember what I was going to say as well as staying on track of where I was going in my speech.…

I took two classes for the summer of 2016, but the Interpersonal Communication class had me worried the most. I had a training with the army, and that required me to absence from school for two weeks. Unlike my other class, I didn’t have a chance to work ahead of the class with the instructor for the two weeks that I would be missing. Therefore, I was worried that I wouldn’t catch up with my classmates and end up failing the class. However, Ms. Anna was generous and extended the assignment due date for me; she even gave me an extra-credit assignment to replace the credits that I missed during my two weeks in training.…
