Introduction: To saddle a horse, it takes a lot of little instructions. Be aware of your surroundings at all times to ensure your safety and follow these steps in order.
Caution! Horses are animals that can cause severe accidents resulting in broken limbs or even death. Be cautious when dealing with them.
Step 1: Preparation
1 Ensure your horse is properly tied with a halter and lead rope.
2 Make sure all debris and dirt is brushed off to make the horse more comfortable with a saddle on.
3 Place saddle blanket on the horse. It should be placed over the horse’s withers and made even on either side of the horse.
Step 2: Placing the Saddle on the Horse

Lift the saddle onto the horse directly on top of the saddle blanket. Make sure to do so as gently as possible so as not to spook the horse.
2. Lower the cinches, breast collar, and stirrup gently over the side of the horse.
Step 3: Front Cinch
1. Lace the latigo (long leather strap) through the front cinch ring.
2. Keep the latigo going back up to the d-ring. Lace the latigo through the d-ring and then back down through the front cinch ring again. Keep the latigo from getting twisted.
Helpful Hint: Blue arrow points towards the d-ring. Green arrow points towards the front cinch ring.
1. Keep repeating steps 1 and 2 until the saddle is snug up to the horse. Just enough that the saddle is secure but not as tight as you need it to get on and ride.
2. Stick the tongue of the front cinch ring through the nearest hole in the latigo and lace your latigo through its keeper by the saddle horn.
Step 4: Back Cinch
1. Buckle the back cinch. The purpose of this is to keep the back of your saddle from jumping up when riding.
2. Use the two finger rule. Place two fingers between the back cinch and the horse and that is where you want it to be.
