The public, local elected officials, Michigan’s Department of Environmental Equality, and the Environmental Protection Agency were not involved in the project. They should have been overseeing the change to ensure that mistakes were not made and that the city manager’s idea would benefit, and not harm, the residents of Flint. Third, the government was not open and honest with the people as it carried out this project. Fourth, the government failed to attempt to improve the economy in Flint. The struggling economy was the primary reason the water source was being changed, as officials were attempting to save money.…
In “Lead Contamination in Flint - An Abject Failure to Protect Public Health” David Bellinger examines the impact Flint’s contaminated water has and will continue to have on its population, primarily the children. In 2014, executives from the Flint Water Treatment Plant decided to use the Flint River as the main source of water instead of Lake Huron as a “cost saving measure.” The river is polluted with lead from older, now defunct industrial factories which specialized in products that contain harmful byproducts. One of the water-purifying agents used in the Flint River is ferric chloride which has an effect on naturally occurring bio-matter in water, increased corrosiveness.…
This probably lead to the start of this crisis. Flint being a small and poor town didn't help it either. The state took control of the budget, not caring about the local population, and they were the ones that made the switch of water supply to the Flint River. They also didn't care about the city because it wasn't a big city like Detroit, so they just did anything to reduce cost.…
In the article “I’m a Flint resident. I’m done paying for water that is not safe” by Tunde Olaniran, Olaniran discusses the issues surrounding the water crisis in Flint Michigan. She speaks of her own history regarding the unsafe water and how she paid her bills until she was afraid to drink it or even let it touch her skin. The water crisis is due to high levels of lead and corroded pipes which combine together to make unsafe water for all purposes. Some experienced hair loss and scalp issues when washing their hair.…
My article is about the Flint water crisis and how people still can’t drink the water there. Three years ago Flint leaders decided to switch the city's water source to Lake Huron. Lake Huron is a heavily polluted Lake that many businesses dump waste into. The city’s leaders decided to change the water source because the city went bankrupt and the leaders wanted to save money. The water change was only supposed to be temporary and save the city five million dollars.…
Makayla Callan Helmic Writing February 22, 2015 Flint Water Crisis Flint has been having big problems with water since 2014, causing lead poisoning and making people sick. All of this is because they want to save money or so people thought. Is it true that Flint wanted to save money? That question was answered by an email from Motor City Muckraker which shows that they would have saved 800 million dollars in 30 years than switching to the Karegnondi Water Authority. People say that Governor Snyder was lying about the crisis and they knew that it was a waste land.…
The Flint Michigan water is a problem that should have never happened.…
If another water crisis emerges, or another crisis involved in the state and local infrastructure that surrounds cities like Flint, then many more lives will unduly suffer in the near future. Poverty is a strong factor in the lives of Flint and they will not improve if laws like this are still active. The time trend for this is also urgent as many Flint residents depend on bottled water and while the water was switched back to Detroit’s system, large amounts of lead were still found in the plumbing systems. The government failure in Michigan must be dealt with in not just one angle but with alternatives that may shed light and solutions in not only the Emergency Management law, but also the water infrastructure that has caused so many illnesses and deaths, that will continue to increase if little or nothing is done to rectify the gross malfeasance that has directly impacted the lives and health of many Flint residents, for not just short-term scale but in the long-term as well since lead poisoning has many different manifestations in a number of people that can occur later in…
Chevar Mcnair There was a huge crisis going on in Flint, Michigan that was causing a lot of controversy around the United States. Flint was suffering for nearly nineteen months because of a law passed by their governor. Governor Snyder decided to sign a law that changed Flint’s primary drinking water from the Great Lakes to the Flint River so it will save money for flint. Now there is no water that is safe to drink at all in Flint because this now meant that the water will now have a percentage of led which is dangerous to the human body. By doing this people would not be able to drink their own water from their faucet because it will cause them to get sick.…
The main idea of this passage is that sending bottled water to the people affected by the Flint water crisis doesn’t really help them. It is stated in the text that it would simply take too much bottled water to actually make a difference. As shown in this sentence,” 102,000 citizens times 200 bottles of water – which equals 20.4 million 16oz. bottles of water per day. The author also states that sending bottled water doesn’t reverse the damage that has already been done.…
This has been a contentious issue that has caused numerous accusations. Governor Scott has indicated the Flint City Council ought to be blamed as they voted to switch from the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department to the Karegnondi Water Authority (Ridley,2016). However, fact-checkers have argued the Flint City Council only voted to switch water providers and refrained from voting to utilize the Flint River as an alternative source of water (The Center for Michigan, 2016). The financial dire straits Flight was experiencing and Michigan’s response makes the situation murkier. In 2011, Michigan’s Treasury Department recommended that the City of Flint be placed under an emergency financial management “Due to Flint’s structural deficit, increasing legacy costs, and accumulating debt. . .”…
Roger and Me Essay When General Motors left Flint, it put many people out of work and out of their homes. People became homeless and struggled to make ends meet. Justin Wing Final Paper Section 101 GSI: Elizabeth Gilbert 6/28/17 The Flint Water Crisis and Implicit Racism Imagine consuming and using water that is not clear, but yellow in color. This is a harsh reality that the people of Flint, Michigan experience every day. The Flint Water Crisis reflects the structural and environmental racism towards African Americans in the United States government due to the disproportionate exposure of lead and other toxic chemicals in the water and their lack of political power.…
You think it’s still okay, but it’s not. The Flint water crisis is a tragedy where the governor of Flint made a mistake by not telling one of the poorest cities in the U.S. , Flint, Michigan about lead in their water. If we are going to help the residents of Flint and make sure this doesn’t happen again, we need to know what is the Flint water water crisis, what is happening to the residence of Flint, and what we can do to stop it.…
As most of America is aware of by now, there is a grave injustice happening in Flint, Michigan. The city’s drinking water is heavily contaminated with lead and has been since 2014. The problem began when the city of Flint switched to using the Flint River as a source of drinking water. A month after the switch was made, residents began to “complain about the smell and color of the new water, which [was] 70 percent harder than its previous water source” (Kennedy, 2016). Despite the complaints, no action was taken.…
