For example, parole has roots in French, English, and Irish history and stems from the French phrase “parole d’honneur,” which is when well behaving prisoners are released early with their word to live within the law. This is essentially the definition of parole, offenders are conditionally released after serving prison time before their full sentence is served. Both probation and parole are extremely important in the criminal justice field. Not only is it economically friendly to have defendants on probation and parole, but it also allows for the probationers and parolees to have support systems (whether it be family, positive friends, organizations, groups, or even their probation or parole officer) and promotes rehabilitation (Fagin, 2016). The purpose of rehabilitation is to help the offender stop behaving in a negative illegal way and to learn how live and impact others in a more positive manner. In total, there are five methods of counseling. The reason why there are multiple models is due to the fact that everyone is unique and thrive off of different approaches. Depending on the individual and the circumstances, certain forms of therapy are preferred while others are not. Sometimes a client is taking the initiative to see a professional, while other times it is forced by a third party – like in probation and parole when a judge orders the individual to complete the program or face imprisonment. No matter the circumstance of how an individual has gotten to the point of receiving counseling, the goal is to help that person with whatever it is that has brought them to treatment.
