Their punishment must fit the crime. “Margaret Elizabeth Daly was arrested for attacking Pete Gibbons with a knife, who told the investigating officers: ‘Yeah, I cut him and I should have done a better job. I would have killed him but I didn’t want to go to the gas chamber’” (Jacoby 4). Although Daly still had no remorse for attacking Gibbons, she gave a second thought to her actions as the death penalty was in the back of her mind. “They count between three and [eighteen] lives that would be saved by the execution of each convicted killer” (Tanner 1). These family members have to relive the story while on trial day in and day out, and that most likely is the last thing they want to do. Having the criminal put to death eases the family’s mind, knowing that the criminal can no longer disturb them in the future. There are many victims of a single murder. The criminal gets caught, tried, and convicted, and it is understood that the punishment will be severe. But the people they have killed no longer have a part to play in this. Unfortunately, the murderer has deprived their family and friends of a loved one. Their grief begins with the killer himself. A system in place for the purpose of serving justice cannot do so for the surviving victims and family members, without the murderer bring put to
