Abusing prescription pain relievers has become a worldwide problem and it needs to be stopped. In the United States alone, an estimated amount of 2.1 million people are victims of disorders and addictions caused by prescription pain pills. This problem is rising at an exponential rate and the number of deaths due to prescription pain relievers overdose is 4 times higher than it was in 1999. People are using these medications as a cheaper way to get high. However, these alternative drugs may cost less, but the consequences of abusing these pills are too high to take the risk. The short term health effects include slow movement, and reaction time, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Now if you’re driving and the pills you took an hour ago kick in, not only are you risking your life, but you’re putting other lives on the road in danger as well. These side effects are just short term so they will go away after a certain time period; however, the longer term side effects are the ones that really take a toll on your health. Crushing and snorting the pills increases your chances of a heart attack along with long term cardiovascular issues. Also, a case with the street drug Opana led to some serious consequences. The usage of this drug was associated with a rise of the HIV virus in users of this drug, a virus not worth contracting just to get high. One thing is common with all opiate derived pills is a long-term addiction and dependence, both physical or psychological. Taking an illegal prescription pill “just once” is not going to stop after the first use. In conclusion, there are many reasons as to why illegal prescriptions need to be stopped in America. An example of a large scale situation took place not too long ago with a call center scam operation in India. Several people were receiving phone calls threatening to do things to them if they did not give them the information they wanted. The people gave in and the criminals were making millions in commisions overseas for every phone call. However, this successful scamming business was short lived. Soon enough the FBI got involved and traced the calls back to the Mumbai, India and raided the call center, catching everyone except for the man in charge of the whole operation. All the people working on the phones were arrested, but the main man who escaped with millions. Now this is where the legal accountability came in. The young man running the operation would give his parents all expense paid trips to foreign countries, buy them cars, bought them a new home. His parents were under the impression that they helped their son start up a legitimate business and that all the money was legal but the police still arrested both of them. Despite the fact that neither of the parents knew where their son’s income was actually coming from, they used the money and didn’t ask any questions. As a result, due to their involvement in the spending of stolen money and aiding in starting up the business, the parents received criminal charges even though their son was the one committing them.
