One is peripheral blood stem cell harvesting( Method of Collection). This can be done by putting an IV in each arm of a patient, and blood from one arm then goes to an aphaeresis machine where CO34+ stem cells separate. The remaining blood then goes to the IV in the other arm. Another way is a bone marrow harvest. This works by putting the patient under general anaesthetic, and using a series of needles to extract bone marrow directly from a large bone, like the pelvis. Both harvesting techniques are used. There are some advantages of both procedures. The peripheral blood stem cell harvest recovers faster, no anaesthetic, can be repeated if not enough is collected the first time, and a low risk of cancerous cells. Bone marrow harvest isn 't used as often, but is still used when a donor can not harvest enough peripheral blood stem cells(Method of …show more content…
The people for using stem cells think the week-old blastocysts are not humans, and destroying the embryos is not killing it. Scientist argue that an embryo is not a person until it is at least two weeks old. Benefits of stem cell research outweigh moral concerns about the embryo. Federal funding advocates say research will continue with or without the government. Government should be allowed to regulate research since they believe information about advances should flow freely to the public. A number of religious groups support stem cell research and many Protestant and most Islamic and Jewish theologians are for stem cell research also(Cases For and Against Stem Cell
