One of the main uses was as a valuable source of food for the Inca Indians held as slaves in the Spanish silver mines Around the 1600s is when the potato made its first appearance in Italy, England, Germany and France. Due to its relations to the nightshade family many people were fearful of eating potatoes, as they that they could die. During the Industrial Revolution in the late 1700s, the demand for cheap food was so bad that potatoes became the most grown crops around.
