Lemmen had limited formal training in the decorative arts but wanted to use a bunch of colors to express his sister’s personality. Lemmen older sister, Julie was unmarried therefore barred no children but raised his. Julie had conflicting traits in her personality that Lemmen ties together perfectly. Julie seems to have this elegance to her from her strong posture and clasped hands. She also gives us the feeling that she is a human person. Although, she is very classy she is also a normal human being. The bags under her eyes and not the smirkish smile you see in paintings with Marie Antoinette. I can see her raising kids day and night tending to their every need, so it is highly understandable that she is tired. That she is tired from running the womanly duties that she is given. Julie is looking straight forward but not at you. It is like she is looking beyond you, past anything you can see. To me it is like she is daydreaming, or thinking of the future. Julie does not only seem uptight in the painting but also very soft as well. Her face has soft curves to it, that seems to make her sweet. Although Lemmen’s elder by 13 years she looks a little younger. Although, her hair is in a bun she also has a strand of hair out, which takes away from the idea that she is strict and mean also makes her more humanized. Although she is expressionless her eyes say it all. The light blue eyes that complement the whole painting, they make Julie look like a tired but regal lady. Lemmen perfection is not only through Julie but also through his skills. Lemmen adds an immense amount of texture to the painting by; making the drapery behind Julie have wrinkles making it more than just a background , Julie's dress has wrinkles as well that makes her in 3D than flat and boring. Her dress look smooth and soft through his painting. I am highly impressed by how talented Lemmen is although, his training compared to others seems to be lacking. Lemmen was drawn to Georges Seurat, Lemmen even joined the avant-garde group Les Vingt. That is where he was really exposed to Georges’ work. You may know George from his famous painting, Sunday on LA Grande Jatte
