Plantar fasciitis is a very common cause of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a flat band of ligament that connects heel bone to the toes and supports the arches of the foot. If the plantar fascia is strained, it gets swollen, weak and inflamed as a result the bottom of the heel or foot hurts as we attempt to stand or walk.
Plantar fasciitis usually occur in middle-aged people or younger individuals who require lots of standing such as soldiers and athletes. It can occur in single foot or both feet. Most people with plantar fasciitis have pain when they take first steps after they get up from bed or after sitting for long time. Symptoms are not regular and may resolve after anti-inflammatory measures followed by stretching exercises.
• Stage 2: Sharp pain during activity and symptoms are present also during rest. Usually patient is able to perform routine activities. The inflammatory cells are decreased and increased angiofibroblastic invasion. In this stage the patient is at high risk to develop calcaneal spur.
• Stage 3: Intense pain is present during activity and also during rest. There are significant functional limitations due to pain and patient cannot perform routine activities. The patient may have partial or full rupture of plantar fascia and extensive angiofibroblatic invasion.
Signs and symptoms :
• Dull pain under the heel and of gradual onset
• More pain on weight bearing and on prolonged standing
• Pain will decrease during the day but will increase during activity
• Pain interferes with walking
• Pain starts when taking first step in the morning
• Pain maybe localized to the heel or radiate throughout the bottom of the foot toward the toes
• Morning stiffness that will improve with walking and activity and will return back during
