So . . . . . Where is it?

The MSA Camp is located on the smaller side of Catalina. It is on the opposite side of Catalina's only developed city; Avalon. This amazing feat of conservation was accomplished by not disturbing the land or creatures. The plant life in Catalina is very diverse. You can find prickly pear cacti and fake berry plants! Some plants at Catalina even release toxic fumes when burned! Catalina, like all other islands, not only has plants, but animals as well! It has a few pigs and many other animals! If you look really close at the landscape from the hill, you might see buffalo! Take caution; these animals should not be messed with.

Statistics -
- 21 miles wide
- 8 miles tall - 54 mile perimeter - 76 square miles of area - 22 miles from California at nearest point * Highest point is Mt. Orizaba (2,097 feet) Activities . . . . . Kayaking Snorkeling Classes KAYAKING Kayaking in Catalina is a LOT easier than you think. It is extremely difficult to fall off the kayak (unless you stand in it) and you go pretty fast without having to paddle extensively. In MSA, you kayak to a rock out in the distance where birds like to go rest on. And of course, it is extremely white! This is obviously because of the enormous amount of bird poop on the island and it stinks like sewage when you approach it. Overall, kayaking to the island is educational but not always pleasant. NOTE: There is a kayak tournament on the last day!

SNORKELING
In this activity, you see an extreme amount of biodiversity. Kelp, Giribaldi, Opal Eye, Moray Eels, water snakes, and other marine life are spotted in this journey. You are in the water for approximately 30 minutes and the water is 65 degrees F. The snorkel helps you breathe while under the water. Sometimes, as you're swimming, kelp will brush against your legs. As you go deeper into the ocean, the bottom is approximately 20 feet deep and many animals can be observed. After snorkeling, you try to identify what fish you saw.
CLASSES
Most of the time in MSA, you are in a class. Some classes include pollution, touch tank, fish, birds, and other animals. Each class has a character trait and spiritual application for that trait. The classes in Catalina are extremely educational and have interactive games. For example, the bird lab is taught with kayaks (you kayak to the island) and the fish lab is taught with the snorkels (you see them underwater). Most of the classes in the MSA are related to marine life.

The dining hall contains the stations where you get food. Once you get your food, you go outside and eat at the tables. There are no chairs or tables in the inside so you are forced to eat outside. The dining hall is extremely large (probably the size of a small house). Breakfast Lunch Dinner BREAKFAST Breakfast in the MSA is fairly simple. Just scrambled eggs, waffles, pancakes, and bacon. However, the quantity was enormous. You can eat 2 full plates of BACON!!! The strawberries were also extremely delicious and coated with

As I dive over the ice cold pool, dread and regret fill every moment until my body finally makes contact. For two, sometimes three, hours the situation will only worsen as I repeatedly raise my arms above my head and pull back as hard as possible. Weeks of this pass by, all for the sake of being able to travel through 100 meters of water a few milliseconds faster. Swimming has been my primary sport since the age of eight.…

The camp you will be staying at is off the coast of Southern California and is on the North Western side of Catalina. It is 22 miles from Los Angeles which is where you board the ship that takes you to Catalina. When you are outside (or sometimes even when you are inside), the temperature is normally really warm and sometimes humid so I would suggest bringing and applying sunscreen in the morning and after every meal. Some of the native plants are eucalyptus trees, pine trees, moss, and cherry trees. The cherries that are on Catalina Island are different than what we are used to.…
