Introduction When only a skeleton remains, is there any hope in identification? Due to the continuing advancements in technology, the answer to that question is, yes! Facial reconstruction is not a new avenue of identification, but is continually adapting to be more useful in the forensic community. The documentary, The Mad Trapper tells the story of a Canadian mystery where an unidentified criminal is exhumed in attempts to attain an actual identification using new forensic techniques. This essay will provide an explanation of basis of facial reconstruction, outlining the major categories of reconstruction and the technologies used to aid in the process.…
To answer this question I will fist give an explanation of what functionalism is and its relation to dualism, materialism and mind-brain identity theory. From here I will outline the two key objections it faces namely the extra-cranial objection or china brain thought experiment and the qualia objection. I will state and explain why the qualia objection is the most serious of the two and why functionalism at present can not fully overcome it but in doing so I will address the replies functionalism gives as defence against this. Functionalism Functionalism is a form materialism, which in turn is the interpretation of processes of the mind as both mental states and brain states depending on how they present themselves, however there is only…
Following the readings and presentations on the mind/body problem, and having read the synopsis and viewed the episode, I have come to believe that Piccard and Maddox view the personhood (or lack thereof) of Data entirely from different perspectives - at least for much of the episode. Piccard, from the very start of the suggestion of disassembling Data to further knowledge and create additional beings like him, is extremely convicted that the very proposal of such an act is not just wrong, but inhumane. Piccard approaches this from the mind/body problem view of dualism. Piccard sees Data both physically and mentally, a view that suggests two properties coinciding within Data - physical properties which "are properties of the body, while mental properties are properties of the mind." (Hasker, 1983, p. 65) For Piccard, referring to Data as a machine or a thing…
Comparative Study "Physiognomy" refers to to the study of a person's character or personality from his or her outer appearance; mainly using the face. The word comes from the Greek “physis” meaning "nature" and “gnomon” meaning "judge" or "interpreter”. Studies into the science reveal that human kind have evolved an impulsive ability to make judgements of people based on their appearance. What began as a survival skill, assessing efficiently if the person before us friend or foe, has developed into a complex part of our psychological make up. Malcolm Gladwell's book Blink introduces us to "thin-slicing": our ability to gauge what is really important from a very narrow period of experience.…
Morphology is the study of the structure and form of organisms. Six skulls were looked at to be determined identified using morphological characteristics. This can determine the genus and species and time the hominid was likely alive. It can also help anthropologists know more about what the living conditions were like in the time that that species was alive. Traits like a sagittal keel or large molars can show that the food that that species consumed was likely tough and required a lot of chewing.…
Bones that were taken from the body at the crime scene went under much analysis in order to determine the gender, race, height, and age of the missing person that was retrieved. The first part of data was retrieved in order to determine the gender of the missing person. The pelvic bone was analyzed first. The first measurement made was for the degree of the Sub-Pubic angle and gave forth the measurement of 84 degrees. This test, however, was redone and the final determination of the angle is found to be 92 degrees.…

Substance Dualism is a theory of mind that asserts the thesis that there exists the mind (nonphysical) and the body (physical) and that they are two distinct substances. Moreover, it identifies a being immediately with their mind and only secondarily with their body. Logical Behaviorism is branch of philosophical behaviorism. Behaviorism, essentially, is the thesis that mental states, if they exist, are identical to behavioral states. Logical Behaviorism posits that descriptions of mental states are reducible to descriptions of behavioral states.…
For instance, our current technological advances in the medical world has presented that “when a person is performing a certain task, characteristics changes take place in the brain,” (Lawhead 82). Furthermore, physicalism is able to explain how mind concerning consciousness and intelligence is formed due to the physical aspects of the brain based on the combined efforts of each individual and physical aspect of the neuron of the brain (Lawhead 82). Another prime example of how brain activity relates to the development and changes to the mind is the Phineas Gage case. Due to the terrible trauma that Gage experienced from the work accident at the construction site, Gage experience a steep change in personality. Before the gruesome accident, Gage was known as an “easygoing, friendly, and intelligent person,” (Lawhead 83).…

A changing society was ready for new ideas to explain the functions of the brain and many people welcomed the doctrine of Phrenology (Critchley, 1965). People began to believe less in God and phrenology offered an innovative view, starting to question both materialism and fatalism. After an attack on phrenology by the Edinburgh Review, which was a very highly respected magazine, the Edinburgh Phrenological Society decided to accommodate the science to become appealing to the public. The Society thrived on large debates, pulling in huge crowds, and after the Edinburgh Review refused to publish one of their debates, Phrenologists started publishing their own journal ‘The Phrenological Journal and Miscellany’. This gave them a lot more freedom…
Robert Smithson’s 1968 essay titled “A Sedimentation of The Mind” is a response to the lingering question: what is the justification of land art? Smithson’s answer was that the justification was both the sensation that dedifferentiation gives to the land artists and the impure natural processes that are incorporated gives land art its quality, while arguing that the time that encompasses the sensation and mental processes when creating their works were just as important as the actual works themselves. As a fellow land artist himself, Smithson attempts to explain dedifferentiation, the sensation it gives, and why it gives land art its quality, using what the Minimalist artist Tony Smith experienced during his car ride on an unfinished turnpike as an example. Tony Smith spoke about how the experience was revealing to him, something that critics such as Michael Fried were shocked by.…
“People who do not understand themselves have a craving for understanding” (Wilhelm Stekel). The human mind is highly complex and very difficult to study since thought processes and feelings cannot be seen. The term psychology is composed of two Greek words: Psyche, which means spirit or soul, and Logia, which translates to the study of something. So what is Psychology?…
Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions. Wilhelm Wundt first began research for psychology psychologists have developed from around the world to bring us five main perspectives of psychology, known as, the five schools of thought. The five schools of thought help people to understand why people do certain motions, how people interact with each other, where we develop our mannerisms, and to have a deeper understanding of the human mind, through: biological, psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive and humanistic perspectives. Biological psychology is the study of the physiological bases of behavior, which follows “the relationship between psychological processes and the underlying psychological events” (Britannica,…
