No one thinks twice when they get a second plate of food or leave their bedroom lights on when they go to the store. Nobody stops to think that they are being wasteful; that they are taking these things for granted. People seldom realize that the endless supply of food, water, electricity, and sunlight that they have grown used to could be taken at any moment. In the novel, This World We Live In, an asteroid hits the moon, pushing it closer to the Earth. A dark fog falls upon the world and the summer sky is a distant memory at best. 10 minutes of electricity is a miracle. Eating any more than one meal a day is a luxury. Living becomes harder as each day goes by. This all helps to illustrate Pfeffer’s theme people begin to miss the things they took for granted once they are gone.
