Persuasive Speech: Fellow Hawaiians

Decent Essays
Fellow Hawaiians,

How would you like the idea of our island, Hawaii, being annexed with the United States? Well my fellow Hawaiians, we do not have a choice but go along with it and see what it may bring us. We do not know what they have in store for us. The Americans can come up with so many great things for us and our children. We do want the best for them right?! Well let us give them the island and see what may come. William McKinley’s decision will be made later on in the next year, 1897.. As President Cleveland said last year, the agreement is “flagrant wrong”, how will he know if he does not know yet what may happen? Many of you may not like it but they are much powerful than us so I say we take their agreement to do it.

Sincerely,

The book Overthrow by Stephen Kinzer is a collection of stories describing different events in which the U.S. overthrew foreign and oppressive governments, or simply governments that were not beneficial for America. One of the stories he included was America’s annexation of Hawaii, a massive turning point in our country’s history. However, The way Kinzer writes and retells the story is slightly biased towards the side of the Hawaiians. This makes for a story that may change peoples perspectives on an important piece of history. The Majority of the accounts and sources he credits are Hawaiian, and the U.S. is not as well represented in his bibliography.…

That is a great question Susie. Hawaii wasn't always a part of the United States, and shouldn't be a part of the United States now since it is an illegally occupied nation. In 1898, a couple of American business men living on the independent island of Hawaii started to say that the United States should make Hawaii one of their territories. They said this because it would be profitable to them if Hawaii became a state.…

The American flag is one of the last symbols of hope. It stands for life, support and freedom. One example of how the flag is a symbol of life is when people die the veterans, the soldiers or anyone who worked for this country bring all the flags to half-mast to honor the people that die during the incident that occurred. When a flag is old and tattered persons cut the stars out and send them to friends and family so the flag is remembered but isn't “suffering”. The U.S. flag also stands for support.…

The acquisition of Hawaii can be described as a bitter over throwing of the queen, Lydia Kamakaeha Liliuokalani, and her government by a group of American planters who were interested in nothing more than creating a fortune. The issue brought in many figures including United States soldiers, Presidents Benjamin Harrison, Grover Cleveland and William McKinley, Sanford Dole, and nonetheless, congress. Although Hawaii was interested in sugar trade with the United States, they were not typically pleased about the conspired annexation that the U.S claimed as manifest destiny. However, the acquisition of Hawaii did benefit America as it was a ‘“stepping-stone to the growing trade of the Pacific,’” according to Grover Cleveland (Tindall and Shi 696).…

Even Though, taking rule over Hawaii and the Philippines would be very beneficial for the United States. It is important for both countries to be annexed for the sake of our country. This is because it would make the United States look selfish and greedy. Having Hawaii and the Philippines imperialized would give us a bad title because we are using both countries for their benefits. During the late 1800s the United States where imperializing other countries to benefit and make themselves a overly strong country.…

Know Your History The people of Hawaii tend to have a misconception of Hawaiian history. Hawaii's people understand a history of Hawaii but not the correct one because of the denationalization of our people. Denationalization is the term used in the law but it means the same thing as “brain washed” and it is the same method the Germans used in World War II. The Germans used it against the Jewish people to wipe out the population of Jewish people.…
