Well the answer is not weight loss pills or supplements. “The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently warned consumers about the risk of weight loss supplements adulterated with multiple pharmaceutical agents” (Cohen). While the FDA says not to take weight loss pills, “Advertisers use weasel words to appear to be making a claim for a product when in fact they are making no claim at all” (Lutz 520). They make empty claims based on little to no information. Weight loss pills and supplements use different words and tactics to convince their consumers to buy their product. Some of the products have ingredients that contain drugs, and can easily cause harm, overdose or worse case death. In certain sections of the book Language Awareness: Reading for College Writers, there are a few chapters that go into more depth about how advertisers use weasel words, like “help” and “new and improved” to get their consumers to think that it’s better and more advanced to help them. Levothyroxine is a thyroid medicine to help “[replace] hormone[s] normally produced by [the] thyroid gland” (Drugs.com). Then there’s Liothyronine, which is “a man-made form of a hormone that is normally produced by your thyroid” (Drugs.com). There are other compounds all mixed together in diet pills and weight loss supplements that no one knows about. If an individual carefully read about every one of the compounds it would be surprising how much these industries get away with. This lower level of classification allows the supplements to make claims about its projected results even though these claims have not been properly verified. For example, one supplement on the market called Thermovex claims it is designed to promote fat-loss, enhance energy levels, and improve muscle definition; however, denoted in fine print with the typographical dagger symbol, the product explains that the statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and the product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. The Thermovex example demonstrates how supplement companies manipulate the already minimal regulations placed on them through the use of a disclaimer just pitch their product. In purely financial terms, the drugs cost more than $3 a day on average (Duenwald, 2004). In each of the clinical trials, use of medication was accompanied by an expensive regime of behavioral therapies, including counseling, nutritional education, fitness advising, and monitoring. As journalist Greg Critser (2003) noted in his book Fat Land, use of weight-loss drugs is unlikely to have an effect without the proper “support system”—one that includes doctors, facilities, time, and money (p. 3).
