The notion that someone’s personal attire can disrupt someone else’s concentration in a learning environment is foolish to even consider. One dresses to fit ones personality, to boost ones confidence, and to make oneself feel original, not to be the top of their class. Material things such as clothes, piercing, and unnatural hair will only continue to cause a distraction when a teacher calls someone out for it being out of dress code. The distraction is not the dress code policy, it is the school staffs reaction when it is broken. In order to eliminate the distraction all together, the students need to band together and start a petition or something of the sort to let the school administration know that in a world where mainly everyone has

“Netflix distracts you, Facebook distracts you, surfing the web distracts you, but you will never hear a story about someone losing a whole afternoon of productivity by seeing colored hair.” Schools go overboard and put students in ISS (In School Suspension) for colored hair when ISS is supposed to be a punishment for students who misbehave, not students who just want to get creative with their personal appearance. Straight A students involved in extracurricular activities are being taken out of their learning environment and placed in ISS/Suspended. Being removed from school for x amount of days takes away the point of school altogether! Ultimately, the school administration has turned the focus from United States History to what we look like and if it is too vibrant for a bland subject. Closed are used to help express yourself and the things you like. Piercings can often help distinguish what cliché you are in and [possibly] some of your interests. Unnatural hair colors help build up self-confidence and are a fun way to make yourself noticeable through being creative. Ultimately, you are the one in control over what you want to do to your body, so start a petition to let the schools know that the student body is not distracted by such things anymore since the majority have phones and see it all on a daily
