RITTMAN — The use of Tasers has sparked some controversy over the years, but a Rittman police sergeant can remember a time when a Taser saved a man’s life.
Sgt. Robert Shows recalled the 2011 incident during a discussion of how a grant, from the Andrew Berkey Fund of the Wayne County Community Foundation, for new Taser guns would benefit the department.
Shows and officer Chris Cerino were looking for a suspect involved in a home invasion who stabbed the home owner. The two saw the man in question walking between houses, and Shows called out to him. He repeatedly told the man to show his hands, which were covered with a shirt.
When the man finally did show his hands, he brought out a knife and threw it Shows. The sergeant already had his Taser

Shows used his Taser on the man a second time.
“Without the option of subduing the suspect with a Taser, we most likely would have had to resort to deadly force,” Shows said. “My Taser saved a knife-wielding perpetrator.”
Chief Ray Arcuri said the $4,000 grant will be used to offset the costs to buy a new Taser for each full-time officer is welcomed news, and it is a great Christmas gift for the officers.
The Tasers in use now are outdated, and there are not enough for each officer. “Officers need a reliable piece of equipment for an emergency,” Arcuri said, adding Tasers are a necessary tool for officers who need a less-than-lethal force option during encounters with violent suspects.
“This is a great opportunity,” Shows said. “Most of our current — obsolete — Tasers were purchased by officers with their own money or with their uniform allowance. We’ve never owned more than two or three. Officers had to sign them out at the beginning of a shift and sign them in at the end of shifts.”
Rittman police use their Tasers several times a year. “It’s the preferred method of counteracting resisting suspects and reducing injury to officers, suspects and the public,” Shows

Police officers should not be allowed to carry Tasers Tasers are hand held weapons which cause temporary paralysis through the application of an electrical current, specifically used by specialist law enforcement units such as the NSW police force. In theory, Tasers were designed to serve as a non-lethal tactic of control for law enforcement officers when it is required to physically detain a dangerous person. While there has been an extensive amount of controversy regarding why Tasers should be legal, there is also a vast majority of arguments as to why they should not be used. This essay will argue why Tasers should not be used by police officers as there has been a vast amount of instances in which officers have impulsively deployed Tasers against individuals who pose no danger, and misuse of Tasers can cause sudden cardiac arrest and death.…

Though many defend current police systems, there has been an obvious rise in on duty shootings ending in severe injury and death of civilians causing a need to mandate harsher consequences for on duty incidents and require body cameras at all times while on duty. Officer involved injuries and killings is an escalating issue all over the nation. Abe Markman…

Tasers would make a great non-lethal weapon that should be used more than lethal force. Furthermore, Journalist Resource states, “Use of Tasers and other CEDs can reduce the statistical rate of injury to suspects and officers who might otherwise be involved in more direct, physical conflict — an analysis of 12 agencies and more than 24,000 use-of-force cases “showed the odds of suspect injury decreased by almost 60% when a CED was used”(Wihbey and Kille). Wihbey and Kille demonstrate how effective Tasers can be to reduce suspect injuries significantly. When they use the word “analysis” it appeals to ethos and logos which convince the readers that Tasers and CEDs can possibly stop police brutality. Today in America cameras can be accessible due to smartphones.…

Non-lethal weapons are used very often, especially since the shooting in Ferguson, many police departments are now using many different forms of less-lethal weapons to apprehend criminals and to control a crowd. “At present, less-lethal weapons are a fact of life. It’s hard to find an agency that doesn’t use at least one in one form or another”(Murgando). Before the controversy of weapons used by law enforcement started there wasn’t very many different kinds of non-lethal weapons used. “”Ask a police officer what are the options when lethal force is justified, and he’ll say, ‘I have my gun and my bullets,’” said Ellis, 32, who recently began marketing the “alternative” in the United States and abroad”(Leiby).…
