In the United States today the most consumed food is meat. Most people have it three times a day. Maybe have some bacon for breakfast, chicken for lunch, and maybe a cheeseburger for dinner. Day in and day out workers work well over hours. In an online article it states “Slaughterhouses and meat processing facilities employ over 500,000 workers.” Also “The workers are predominantly people of color living in low-income communities.” (Workers). In some cases, the workers will be demanded to work more hours, because of the high demand for meat. According to the worker wages site for slaughterhouse workers “…reported average wage is $12 and hour, and a salary of $25,000 a year.” (Wages). The money still doesn’t count for the fact that they work long hours. In an article according to one employee “The last hour of a regular shift is hard. You are tired and it’s hard to concentrate. Then they tell you to work two hours’ over-time. That’s when it gets downright dangerous.” “… these corporations knowingly jeopardize worker’s safety every day.” “And the fact that the threat of termination discourages the workers from reporting safety concerns.”
