Persuasive Essay On Animal Testing

Animal testing is the experimentation on non-human animals. Its purpose is to control the variables that affect the behavior or biological system that is being studied. Animals have been used for biomedical research for thousands of years, dating all the way back to 384 BC by Greek physician-scientists such as Aristotle and Erasistratus. Early scientists such as these conducted animal tests in order to advance their understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology (Hajar 1). In today’s America, over 26 million animals are used in various experiments to develop medical treatments, determine the toxicity of medications, check the safety of products that are potentially going to be used on humans, and other biomedical, commercial, and health care uses (Should Animals Be Used 1). The types of animals that are most commonly used are dogs, monkeys, mice, rats, pigs, and rabbits. The …show more content…
However, there are legal requirements that were created to protect the animals that researchers must follow when conducting these experiments. The animals are safeguarded under the Animal Welfare Act and the Public Health Service Policy of Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Moreover, according to the Food and Drug Administration, “[the FDA] advocates that research and testing derive the maximum amount of useful scientific information from the minimum number of animals and employ the most humane methods available within the limits of scientific capability” (Animal Testing and Cosmetics 1). These researchers are using animals for the benefit of the human race, not for no reason at all. They are using the least amount of animals possible, and performing the most humane procedures on them that they can. It is truly unfortunate that sometimes these experiments cause harm to animals, however, it would be even more controversial if the human species was the one to experience this

People, especially scientists, are hurting innocent animals that did no harm to anyone. Animal testing shouldn't be allowed to happen because animals are getting hurt, they are not protected, and animals get mistreated. One reason that animal testing shouldn’t be allowed is because animals are getting hurt. For instance, the Draize eye test involves rabbits having their eyelids clipped open for as long as multiple days so that they don’t blink the product being tested away. Popular cosmetic brands like L'oreal, Lancome, Estee Lauder, and S.C. Johnson are used on animals.…

One of the big controversy of animal testing is that it is believed to be cruel and inhumane. It is widely known that there have been experiments with animal subjects where animals have been harmed and mistreated to the point of death, and highlighted the need for some sort of protection of animals, which came in the form of the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA), but 95% of the animals that are being tested are not protected under the AWA, such as, birds, mice ,and rats who are bred for research, according to http://animal-testing.procon.org/. Another big point of controversy is that there have been cases where they do not show a side-effect that could be seen in a human consumer or they do not actually work on humans, when it is thought to have found a cure. For example, the drugs thalidomide and Vioxx, with the latter causing 27,000 cases of heart attacks and cardiac arrests. Lastly, the cost of using animals in research is higher than using other alternatives, such as the Animal Humane Societies in vitro, which costs around $11,000 to conduct compared to the $32,000 is would cost to do an animal study. Overall the use of animals for research is harmful to the animals who don 't have aren 't protected as best as they can be and is more expensive than using alternative methods to conduct…

Oliveira 1 Animals should not be used for scientific or commercial testing because animal testing is cruel and inhumane, alternate testing methods are available, and because humans and animals are every different from each other making animals very poor test subjects. Research on living animals has been practiced since at least 500 BC (Animal Testing Pro & Con). Scientist use animals for many different purposes. Animals are used to test the effectiveness and safety of new drugs before those drugs are given to people to treat illness and disease. Animals can also be used as test subjects for products like lipstick, eyeshadow, contact lens solution, and shampoo (Hayhurst, 26).…

After living a life full of pain, loneliness, and terror, almost all of the animals will be killed. Every time we test on these animals there's a 50% chance it could fail, that’s when we start wasting lives. The failure of testing is risky because animals would get diseases like brain cancer or any other kinds of diseases that they probably wouldn’t get. Although animal experimentation has provided many benefits, there are alternatives to test toxic substances that may eliminate the cruel use of animals in research. The United States, along with many other countries, have turned to the use of animals in research labs to test human products for hazardous substances. According to the Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal, the United States uses about 12 million animals every year making it the biggest conductor of animal experimentation in the world. Scientists and many companies believe that testing their products on animals save humans from being harmed if the product is toxic. However, no matter what the benefits of animal experimentation are, the tests conducted on the animals are cruel.…
