Obesity is a very large problem globally and especially in the United States of America. Obesity has been linked to foods and drinks high in fats and sugar. In an effort to combat obesity and improve the health of New Yorkers, the Mayor has created a soda ban. As a result of this ban, many universities and colleges are banning soda and fast food on campus. Though soda may indeed be unhealthy, adults should be able to decide what they choose to drink. While the soda ban may have good intentions, it is a sign of government overreach and should not be implemented. If college students are responsible enough to take out student loans, leave their parents’ homes, and take on the coursework and duties of a college student, they should be more than capable of deciding what they eat and drink.

Fast food is not to blame alone for obesity, and it should be up to the student what he or she chooses to consume. College students are responsible for many things. They must focus on their classes and they often work while doing this. They must schedule their time, plan their day, and be sure to do the things they are supposed to do. Many times, they are also on their own away from home and make important living decisions. If college students are capable of doing all of these things and more, what makes one think that they cannot handle the simple choice of what to eat for lunch? It is actually a very bad thing to let students to not choose for themselves what they want to eat or drink. It basically says that university officials do not think students are capable of making such a choice, which is treating them like children instead of responsible young adults. Taking away the choice is not living in a democracy and does not promote responsibility on the college
