Personal Statement: A Career As A Football Coach

Improved Essays
The summer before my senior year of high school, a local soccer coach gave me an opportunity and asked me if I would be a coach at his youth soccer camp. “Easy money,” I thought. During that week, I enjoyed myself thoroughly learning about both soccer and coaching. What I did not expect to come about was how much I enjoyed working with kids. By the time my senior year ended, I volunteered countless hours to be a Cub Scout Den leader, led the youth band at our church, and furthermore took a Teacher Training course in school where I helped teach junior high band for one semester. Upon graduating, I may not have been sure about which degree I would pursue, but I knew I wanted to have a job where I could work with youth.
After graduating from the University of Idaho in 2005, I pursued professional opportunities as both a soccer coach and substitute teacher for several years before settling into a career as a club soccer coach. For 7 years, I worked as the Director of Coaching for youth soccer clubs in Idaho in charge of player and coach development. Over this period, my job description

Having vast experience in lesson planning, curriculum development, instructing, behavior management, administrative duties, and the ever-persistent parent management. Working in the classroom and on the pitch provided me opportunities to work with a wide range of students and athletes from ages 5 – 18. In my time working with students, I have always pursued opportunities to improve my own knowledge and ability in order to provide the best environment I can. While heavily involved in soccer I pursued a national license only 5,000 other coaches in the United States have obtained. My full intention is on being the best I can be for my students and athletes. More recently, I attended several continuing education clinics on teaching methodology and AP Government

An identity that has accumulated throughout my life could be expressed as a student athlete. As a child, I was always attracted to the idea of playing sports. As soon as I came about the age of four, my parents enrolled me into soccer, baseball and speed school. Juggling between sports, extracurricular activities, and other household chores; my parents expected me to excel in all of these occupations. Between all of these obligations, sports became an alleviation for me, a part of me that I carry to this day.…

If it wasn’t for soccer my work ethic would have been absolutely terrible. All of my coaches I have played under have always required the very best no matter what the circumstance is; on the pitch, in the classroom, or in everyday life you had to put one hundred percent in everything you do, or else there’s somebody is ready to take your job. One example is my sophomore year in high school my coach said I would get big minutes this year. That was not the case my touch on the ball, and work ethic dropped off when I was subbed out for a much better player early in the season after our foreign exchange students came to play with us. Near the end of the season I decided to change my position to a place where I would get more playing time; I moved up in age group to play with and against much better competition.…

Eventually, a month before my first semester at Montgomery College started, the soccer team began with full-force, demanding prospective players to go through a harsh two session per day, seven days a week pre-season. Under the coaching of the demanding yet respectable Pedro Braz, the team and I were embedded with the idea that we had to become discipline and fit in order to raise up to the challenge of keeping the victorious legacy that he had built since his arrival two years ago. Personally, I had never gone through such an intense period of physical work in my entire life, in some instances almost to the point of complete exhaustion. Two weeks, 24 three-hour-sessions later, and our first friendly match in pre-season arrived. I can hardly remember any moments of that game, but I can remember what I felt standing on the pitch waiting to play the game as if I had that moment tattooed on my arm; I felt euphoric at the thought of have completed a pre-season that only very few people could have…

As a running and triathlon coach, getting the best out of athletes is what I do best: regrettably, coaches are so focused on others that they forget to take care of themself. I started the Masters of Public Administration (MPA) program after five years in academic research and teaching. I had lost my passion and took the opportunity to start over again. Last year, my goal was to explore local resources to support professional development as a new member in the community. Understandably, I began with networking with local professional organizations and advocacy groups.…

I started my soccer career, if you could call it that, as a carefree kindergartener. Soccer at the time was just the thing that preceeded the real event, the postgame snack that would traditionally consist of cupcakes or Oreos and a juice box or occasionally the god-awful apple from a health conscious mother. So how is it that this sport would grow to become one of my greatest sources of joy and pride? This pride I speak of has not come from any particular standout skill; I am by no means a soccer maestro, in fact I am no stranger to the bench. Yet my time playing soccer has brought about a satisfaction that is unrivaled by any of my other various enterprises.…

As an athlete, I began my journey in sports full of dedication, fire, and hopeful anticipation of what I could do on the football field and on the basketball court. She told him that he could go to college and be successful, as long as he stayed off the streets and out of trouble. She took her students to plays and required them to dress nicely. She was probably George’s most influential and inspiring teacher throughout his early years. Like George, I had a role model in my soccer career that believed in me also.…

Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences (max 150 words) When I was five years old, my Dad and I would head to ЦСКА, a local Ukrainian park, and hit tennis balls against the wall. I quickly realized how controlled hitting–to avoid the ball flying over the wall–could be a useful strategy. In Moldova, I trained at a local tennis facility with Olga, a motivated Russian coach who taught me how to win through consistency rather than the universally-favored power game. As a result, I won junior tennis tournaments and later in Ethiopia, became the number one player on the tennis team, played in international tournaments, and earned the team’s MVP award.…
